what controls the e-brake light?

The switch under the armrest is contacting fine. But for some reason...somewhere else on the car...something is making my e-brake light come on. Who knows what else controls this light? Its driving me nuts.

Check brake pads, they are probably due for a replacement. If that's not the case, you're low on brake fluid due to a leak or some other reason. Either way, the light will come on when the fluid in the brake reservoir is low, like andrave just said.

I can't believe people drive cars and not know these things... It's basic maintenance for cryin out loud!

I know you guys are tempted to flame others but relax, Im sure there are things you dont know.
The fluid level was fine and the brakes pads were too.

I did perform a search and nothing except the "rear brakes lights" came up.

I do know how to perform maintanence on a car...I do all the work myself including all the upgrades. So I happen to have a clue...I was just lost on this one. I figured the switch and only the switch under the arm rest could control that light. I dont understand how break fluid or pads could cause this. Out of every car Ive owned this is a new one.

I searched some more and found a thread...but nothing besides what is said above was mentioned. Maybe the gage cluster but thats not a likely failure point

only two things can cause this:

1) Brake fluid level sensor

2) E-brake handle has a sensor

For what it's worth this thread helped me. My e-brake light has been on for weaks and I never thought to check the fluid. I neglect my car so much I am surprised it hasn't tried to kill me.

gotta watch it, if its down because your rear pads are worn down and it stays on the metal backing can eat into your rotors... pads are ok to replace and its a lot cheaper to replace them on time. If you wait until they eat into your rotors you are looking at a lot more work and like triple the cost of just replacing the pads now.

Since the weather has been cold I think the sensor in the reservoir is sticking. I moved it around a little bit, tapped on the reservoir and it seems to be fine. We'll see what happens when I get the car started in the morning. Cool deal...I didnt know there was a sensor in there.

Yeah, I've been having a similar problem that just started yesterday... my BRAKE light will come on when I start driving but will go off if I make a hard left turn or will go off eventually after driving for like 10 minutes. I checked my brake fluid and it's a smidge above the "MIN" mark so I figure I'll just put some more fluid in there today. Also, the little connector that hooks up to the reservoir seemed a bit loose so I pushed it in there better. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.
