Diameter has everything to do with flow. The exhaust note and the volume are in the way the muffler and/or resonator(s) is/are designed.
Example:
Take a typical 2.5" Ebay fencepipe/fart-can catback... LOUD AS FUCK!!!
Then compare that to a 80mm, JASMA-certified, HKS Super Dragger... If you ever heard one, the are VERY quiet... almost OEM-sounding- With a nice growl at WOT; but not even remotely close to as obnoxious as the smaller-diameter fart-can.
My exhaust is a 3" (76mm) 5-Zigen... Very well-resonated & unassuming until I open it up. Even then, it sounds great... But I can still carry on a conversation at 90mph without having to shout.
