It doesn't? I thought that diameter had a lot to do with sound and tone which attribute to volume.

Diameter has everything to do with flow. The exhaust note and the volume are in the way the muffler and/or resonator(s) is/are designed.

Example:

Take a typical 2.5" Ebay fencepipe/fart-can catback... LOUD AS FUCK!!!

Then compare that to a 80mm, JASMA-certified, HKS Super Dragger... If you ever heard one, the are VERY quiet... almost OEM-sounding- With a nice growl at WOT; but not even remotely close to as obnoxious as the smaller-diameter fart-can.

My exhaust is a 3" (76mm) 5-Zigen... Very well-resonated & unassuming until I open it up. Even then, it sounds great... But I can still carry on a conversation at 90mph without having to shout.

A 3" exhaust will be louder on a KA than a SR20DET. So, yes piping diameter does have something to do with overall sound level. It is not the primary determining factor, but it does affect it. The muffler/piping diameter was designed to produce a certain sound level with a certain amount of exhaust flow. When you reduce that flow it affects the sound level to a certain extent.
