Shut up already with the Japan vs USA, drifting was once cool in the USA rhetoric.
Drifting sucks because its easily accessible to a wide range of people. Its cheap to build a drift car (yes, you can build a cheap drift car that doesn't suck. 8k is cheap.), Entrance fees are fucking cheap, most tech and safety rules are lax, and your cost of tires can be cheap if you use cheap (or free) tires. When I see people complaining about the cost of entry to a drift event, I laugh.
A winter auto-x at Lime Rock Park is 300 bucks, on packed snow. Hows that for entrance fees?
Moreover, if you make drifting less accessible, (i.e. tighten up tech and safety) you'd shy away the broke boys. and it would cease to suck.
For example; NJ state police wants to make it such that anyone racing on dirt or tarmac is required to wear a HANS device. This may now also apply to drifting. A "cheap" HANS device is about 500 bucks.
