Ha. A couple of years ago an acquaintance and I were sitting at a petrol station nearby his S13. Some crones came by and asked us if the 'drift car' belongs to one of us. My friend said no, and they proceeded to walk around it spewing off the usual opinionated internet genius knowledge, waiting on the owner of the car to show up. After a few minutes we casually got in and left. Their expressions were fantastic.

I dd my s13 and am learning how to drift, I am not proud that I tapped a wall and I would really love to get it fixed.

But you see I work at O'reilys and I don't make enough in a month to buy the sand paper needed....

I absolutely hate beat up S chassis and the owners that are proud I feel like people think that's how I am because of my incident and not because I am too broke.

There is nothing wrong with crashing, or breaking shit while learning to drift. One of my first times drifting I spun out and put my 15 on a pole completely destroying the rear end. But I got it fixed and I'm currently building it up. Crashes make better drivers. I have issues with those people who crash or wreck then just throw the car away even if it's perfectly fine driving wise. I like to think of it this way...Never trust someone with a clean car; they are either amazing drivers and never crash, or they do not drive at all.

I never crashed any of my cars. Maybe because I was raised with the thought and fear that if I fucked up my car, my dad would beat the living fucking shit out of me. So I've always been very careful, even though I drive like a motherfucker. The only mistakes I have made were an occasional spin-out and that was during my first couple years of driving.

Anyone who owns and drives a RWD has immediate respect for the drivetrain. If they dont, they'll end up fucking their car up.

If you want to NOT be a dumbass and plan on driving like Tsuchiya, do it at the fucking track. Years and years of fun canyon racing and never once a crash. If you cant understand limits, numb nuts should stick to FWD/AWD.

ps: holy shit, phlip still posts here? haha

i crashed once. i was backing out the driveway in my moms car and hit my uncles truck. cracked her tail light lens. damn, she was pissed

i plan on picking up drifting for fun.. but it'll be with a '95 mustang
too many 240s getting fucked up, intensional or not.
id feel too bad

any one seen the youtube vid posted in the 2tone preservation thread where he lights a christmas tree on fire and jumps over it in a 2tone and slams into a pile of wood or something
i don't get shit like that and i never will. why do people think thats funny.. a 240sx is an enthusiast car with plenty of potential.

accidents happen. miscalculations happen. no ones perfect. but to go into a motor sport with the mentality of "fuck it, its a missile and thats what these cars are for anyway" is stupid and irresponsible .

like god damn have some respect. the SR put out numbers 20+ years ago that are respected by todays standards
hyandai genisis turbo = 250 hp
s14 sr20= 217 ?
(correct me if I'm wrong)

Drifting can be pretty cool, when it's done right.

For the most part, it's trash culture, perpetuated by stupid fucks who can't drive and don't deserve to touch so much as a smart car.

It doesn't need to be the greatest car ever to be great at specific stuff - being a rwd sports car doesn't just mean drift, it means it's an actual sporty car capable of actual spirited/sporty/controlled driving - it's too bad that a combination of drifting and an irrational obsession with parting out every 240 ever made will kill them all - and when there's just a few, all the things that make it a great car and fun to work on will be gone (that is, aftermarket support, knowhow, innovation, availible parts, etc).

And not being the greatest car ever doesn't mean even one deserves to be cut up when it has not been totaled.

The problem seems to be that 240 guys are often not real car guys - they're posers looking for obnoxious ways to get attention. They don't love cars, plain and simple - they love attention.

This is not to say that trashy can't be classy - love a good ratrod, or original/unrestored car that is repaired as it's necessary to make it function - but that's a far cry from what's done to 240s.

Drifting was cool in USA that one time when the Japanese guys came over. It was uncool when they left. We did the typical American thing. Turned things into a douche fest. We wonder why the whole world hates our arrogant douchetastic asses. We ruin shit lol. ANYONE who was around before the craze already new this would happen. Many left before it started because they couldn't stand to watch it happen in front of their own eyes. It was cool for a brief second, the japanese brands became available from whole salers etc. You could order cool shit from Jspec and panda garage. But a few, proud kids/young adults stuck with it. They didn't let the new Fast N Furious nut swingers change their minds. They new what could be created and what a 240 should look and be built like. The majority consume, the minority creates.

Shut up already with the Japan vs USA, drifting was once cool in the USA rhetoric.

Drifting sucks because its easily accessible to a wide range of people. Its cheap to build a drift car (yes, you can build a cheap drift car that doesn't suck. 8k is cheap.), Entrance fees are fucking cheap, most tech and safety rules are lax, and your cost of tires can be cheap if you use cheap (or free) tires. When I see people complaining about the cost of entry to a drift event, I laugh.

A winter auto-x at Lime Rock Park is 300 bucks, on packed snow. Hows that for entrance fees?

Moreover, if you make drifting less accessible, (i.e. tighten up tech and safety) you'd shy away the broke boys. and it would cease to suck.
For example; NJ state police wants to make it such that anyone racing on dirt or tarmac is required to wear a HANS device. This may now also apply to drifting. A "cheap" HANS device is about 500 bucks.

Yeah they are getting more hard to find in clean condition, but they won't be considered "rare" for another 20-30 years. Thinking about how few ae86s there are compared to 240s, yet the AE chassis isn't even "rare".

I agree with the fact that the American drifting scene sucks. I know it's fun all, but the scene that has evolved is terrible. It's sad that it's almost embarrassing to tell people I own a 240 because they automatically assume it's some ratty piece of shit, and I am some douchey honnigan fuck face drifter, both of which could be further from the truth.

If people are having fun with it, whats the matter? Thats what modding cars is all about anyway right?

Im fine with it to be honest. If anything, having a clean 240 now a days is as rare as seeing a MK IV Supra or clean FD. Obviously Im Nissan biased over here, but in FD world, clean ones are common, in 240 world, clean ones are not. So its cooler to me to see one proper.

Drifting or not, all I would really want is for people to care for what they drive. A lot of friends don't tandem with certain people because "missile, brah". You don't go out to the track to purposely bash your car. Accidents happen.

Rare to see something like this come up for sale.

Came back in to say this is horse shit.

20 something events, 4 different tracks, NEVER FUCKING CRASHED.

And I'm not saying I'm a good driver or have a high skill level at all.

Drive within your limit, find it, push it. Its really fucking easy not to crash. Crashes don't make better drivers, you're outside of your limit, you're not learning shit, you're just flailing your car around like a retard.
Driving within your limit, taking the time to understand what your doing, then doing it better makes better drivers.

I don't get the broke hate.

Some of us are broke - we still like having fun.

Having a lot of money doesn't make you inherently respect stuff, in fact it often does the opposite - you can just afford to be a douche with shiny stuff.

The problem is douches, not having cars accessible to lots of people. I want cars accessible to lots of responsible people, such that we have a voice when it comes to irrational regulations that hurt us (ie. needing carb stamps on your crap, even when your car passess the sniffer, which should be all that matters). It's really hard to argue against that when all the people in your community are either assholes who just want to break everything, or too rich to care, because they'll just erod it or whatever (and since rules effectively just don't apply to people with money).

I've met plenty of people over the years who have built better cars on low budgets than people with deep pockets.

Having come from a low income family myself, I definitely understand what it's like to prioritize. You also learn very early on to not daily drive a project if it's your only method of transportation.

People seem to appreciate a car more that they've built themselves as opposed to having a shop put it all together for them.

In my personal opinion, threads like "You're doing it wrong" really need to go away. We spend more time focusing on and criticizing people who are "doing it wrong" instead of focusing on bettering ourselves and the community as a whole.

Just my .

Not trying to keep the save the s-chassis circle jerk going, but what's a bummer is that due to the surge of "ain't cares/hoonigans/driftbros/whatevers" the aftermarket is being saturated with cheap parts that cater to the mad skids crowd.

Maybe some of us dudes want an aftermarket solution for our worn out window switches, our dry rotted weather stripping, or all the haggard dashes. But nope, that's not happening anytime soon.

Maybe some of us dudes want an aftermarket solution for our worn out window switches, our dry rotted weather stripping, or all the haggard dashes. But nope, that's not happening anytime soon.
I know what you mean. People look at me crazy when I tell them I am not going to put a cheap ass eBay exhaust on my NA KA. Is like why all the kids are putting shitty eBay calls on the car, I'm over here dreaming about replacing the weather stripping in my truck with all new rubber.

MMMMMM.... new weather stripping...

I am hoping I have the patience to keep mine until the industry caters to restorations/replacement parts like my old '66 C10... You can literally build a brand new truck from rep OEM parts... Not saying I need a magazine FULL of parts, but yeah, little things would nice.

It will be a tough 5-10 years to see what happens to the S-chassis from 'drifting', whether Hoonibros will grow up and gain or grow into an appreciation and not "wall ride" every 240 into the ground, therefore there will be replacement parts for the "normal" stuff on a 25+ chassis or companies will stop parts (cheap or otherwise) entirely because there is no more market.

But I doubt it will be the former....

I drive my S13 only a few times a month now. Slowly the drift missiles are being weeded out and within the next 4-5 years we should be left with just the enthusiast 240sx owners with their respectable cars. I would estimate around 20,000 240sx remaining in the USA at that time.
