Clutch time: ACT or Exedy
OK, I'm sure it's been debated before on here, but I'm just looking for everyone's input. Basically, the decision to make is whether I shell out 400-450 for an ACT ( the 4 puck, rated at 350ft/lbs) or 550+ for an Exedy (their stage 2, 3 puck).
Now, there could be a reason for the higher price on the Exedy, maybe quality, sure, but am I just paying more for the name? I'd just like to get some input from someone who's maybe tried them both, or knows someone who has. I'm not in any rush whatsoever, just looking for +/- arguments on both clutches. Keep in mind prices were just quickly researched and I'm sure through connections, I could get better deals. /Flame suit: ON.

exedy stage 2 available at enjukuracing.com for 380 plus shipping. includes pilot bearing, to bearing, alignment tool. there are often deals on this clutch, just wait around for it. IMO, the exedy is more streetable. you drive a japanese car, put in a japanese clutch ;-). ive heard tons of stories supporting the exedy stage 2.. people are saying it can and has handled 350 ftlbs... whether thats true or not, i can only assume. i rock a hyper single anyways haha.

Oh yea, I guess I forgot to say I have a stock KA. Just looking for something indestructible for now. I am planning on a very mild ka-t setup in the future and don't want to upgrade twice.

Exedy 3 pucks don't last for anything. Killed mine in 8000 mile due to puck design which wears out very fast in street driving. Go for more of a street disc if you aren't tracking it or dragging it.

+1 for the exedy stage 2. I have had it in my s14 for about four years now. This is my daily drive and it definately gets beat on from time to time. I have never once had a problem. I would highly recomend the exedy stage 2. Cameron

Hmm, I've been told that I should maybe consider something less extreme, like a stage 1, but I'm worried it wont hold up to the beating. Car is my daily driver, but I don't mind something stiff.
Thanks for the input so far, I guess the Exedy is worth the extra dough.

No ACT. It is misdesigned, and has a poor life.

I have the ACT xtreme pp/organic full-faced disc combo on my SR and dont have any drivability problems on the street...very smooth engagment and has took quite a beating over the last 2 years...i'm a bigger guy, so the pedal effort doesnt really faze me...i can tell you it's alot easier to depress the clutch than the OS Giken twin disc i used to run. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that everyone complaining about the ACT's streetablility was using the puck style disc. oh and i gave right at $480 for my combo....rated at 486lb-ft torque...should be plenty for a mild ka-t with some extra "breathing room"

Nissan240syan How hard are you pushing your car?
Im in the same boat... Im debating on either getting an exedy or an RPS and I am running a stock KA as well and have blown 3 clutches already.

![]() On the topic: I've driven a ACT race clutch. I don't remember if it was a 4 or 6 puck but it wasn't fun thing to drive on the streets with. But I'm guess it would be very good with the tracks. I've personally have bought ACT - Heavy Duty Pressure Plate, street disc kit for $350 w/shipping then now there like a bit more. I haven't installed it yet. I haven't had the chance to...

im in the same boat as you are, shopping around for clutches coz mine is starting to slip..
i did my research for a week or two now and my choices were either: 1. act, 2. exedy, 3. spec, or the "white bunny" special after reading reviews i found out that exedy will be the best bang because of: 1. good life span, 2. bites hard, 3. can take a lot of abuse, 4. very streetable. so i went ahead and ordered mine earlier (stage 1 only tho), which is plenty for what i have planned for the ka within nxt year (200 whp). |

get at least exedy stage 2, because you'll run into the problem of upping the power and before you know it, stage 1 isn't enough
i've driven both stage 1 and stage 2, both are very streetable |

I love my ACT (same one as G-spec). Then again, I have nothing to compare it to.
FWIW, I thought it was very streetable. Takes a little bit of time to get used to it, but after that it works great. In fact, I dread driving my gf's car because the clutch feels way too loose. |

dont know about durability, but I drove an ACT 6puck with hd pressure plate.....holy crap did it suck for the street....so hard to slip it
![]() ![]() I agree with the poster above that for the street you should stay away from ACT puck's, and go with a disc. |

I ran an RPS 6 puck, the non-MAX one, and it was awesome. On a stock KA it's overkill already. Able to hold up 300 ft-lbs of torque. And what's even better... the pedal feel is almost stock like. Maybe slightly stiffer, but not by much. Never had any problems with it and I daily drove it like mad.

Exedy Stage II; www.frsport.com. Call them and speak to Yung (sp?). They advertise on Zilvia and should hook you up nicely.
