s13 school me on engine bay painting??

is the process the same as on a exterior of a car in terms of sanding, primer, paint, clear?

I know I could just rattle can it. but I actually plan on getting a good exterior paint job this year and I want the engine bay to look good as well. I want oem color. cherry red pearl (ah3) if iam not mistaken. This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. Report this image

I sanded mine down good. filled the holes i didnt need, cleaned it all, hit it with a sealer primer, sanded it again and shot it with a couple of coats of base and a couple of coats of clear. first time painting too. turned out pretty good.

only pic i have of the bay:

do it right and take everything out. painted brake lines and wiper motors are gross.

I am not an expert, but when I did mine I just treated it the same as the body, yes. Keep in mind it will be exposed to more dirt, oil, fluids and things that will try to eat it up so part of having a nice engine bay is keeping it wiped clean all the time. I used really expensive paint though so your mileage may vary

Pretty sure that's a stock pignose bumper without a stock lip like most people run.

two days, $2800 in supplies for the entire car, including all the tape, sand paper, and time in the booth etc... First day was pulling everything out and taping it up, then straight to the booth. Gave it 14~ hours to dry and slapped the engine in.

My friend Jason painted the car for me and did the body work. I am not skilled enough to do that- it takes years of experience. I pulled the trigger a few times for fun while holding my breath but he layed down the final coat. Yes I always get a new windshield when the car gets painted, thats just common sense. They are so cheap and you want that fresh seal and to get the paint in all the tight places the glass should all be removed. One of the tricks is to install the universal windshield strip upside down, it looks more pleasing to the eye.

Andy and I did all of the prep in my engine bay... Clean, scuff, sand, fill etc... Then primer, then scuff, sand etc and another 2-3 coats of primer.... Total cost was about $150-200 for everything IIRC. Had the bay shot at Schaeffer's N. Lindbergh location with S14 Ultra Red (AJ4) & clear for another $250.

Result is very nice:

Coat #1 finished:

If you want good results, DO NOT use rattle can. Either source out a compressor and airbrush or have it professionally done. Don't forget to let it sit a few days, then put a good coat of wax on it before putting everything back together.

Get with Andy- For the right price, he may help you with the prep.

P.S. Next time, post in the right section... jackass

I used rattle cans:

I spent a lot of time prepping. This is the kind of result you can get. I did not use any clear coat. I would not recommend rattle cans. If I could go back and do it again, definitely spend the money and take the time to have it painted the right way.
