Integral handbrake upgrade caliper option extravaganza

Hello gentlemen,
First of all, pardon me if this idea is totally stupid for some obvious technical reason that is not obvious to me.
My question is, would it be feasible to adapt Series 6 RX-7 rear rotors and calipers onto an S-chassis?

My main reasoning for doing so is the fact that the RX-7 calipers use an integral handbrake setup very similar to the S-chassis. I believe it could be made to work with the factory cables, possibly without even requiring any (extensive) modification.
If using the calipers would just be a matter of having a custom adapter bracket fabbed up, that would be wonderful.

While the calipers themselves have about the same bore as S13 ones, and are nowhere near as fancy as the 300ZX and Skyline pieces, they are still a bit larger. The most noticeable difference would probably be made by the larger diameter rotor, so they should still be a decent upgrade over stock.

I know I could easily do Z32/R32 brakes, but as I said, I would rather retain the integral handbrake instead of adding the bulky drum setup, which is just personal preference.

Here are some comparisons, stock S13 on left, '93-95 RX-7 on right:

The later model FD's came with even larger rotors and possibly calipers, but since they were not offered here, it would be an annoyance to source them.

The main obstacle would most likely be the fact that the FD calipers are designed for a trailing configuration. This could possibly be solved by running the right caliper on the left side and vice versa, and tinkering with the spring mechanism for the E-brake cables a bit.

Who can make me some custom adapter brackets?

It turned out that this swap was unsafe, because the rotor is not thick enough. At least from what I read on various forums.

However, I am also going to attempt fitting Z31 calipers and rotors, and see if the e-brake cable can be hooked up.
'84-86 Z31 uses 290 x 10mm solid rotors and '87-89 Z31 uses 282 x 18mm vented rotors. Which would be a better choice?

'84-86 Z31 caliper/rotor adapted to some old Datsun. Such cool dinosaur technology.

Apparently a few people lost their brake pads when they became worn down enough. Here is one of the threads:
ATTENTION! Z31/Altima Rotor Rear Brake Owners! : 240sx General Discussion

Even if it turns out it was their fault, I would rather use calipers with the rotors they were intended for.

Just got a Z31 caliper and hub from the wrecking yard to test fit once my 5-lug junk comes in.

I personally used the z31 altima setup on my coupe, went through 2 sets of pads and this was with a 87+ caliper bracket. I had no issues with overhang, or losing pads when they were worn.

rear calipers upgrade

I think this caliper is definitely worth consideration,
its from 2001 Passat, aluminum with built in e-brake.
Caliper is really light and look at the piston bore - 38mm

and the Passat's rotor looks very similar to 240sx

and here is 2002 Altima v6 rotor

It might be worth to make bracket for this caliper and maybe find even lighter than Altima's rotor for this setup.

S14 rear calipers actually have a 38mm piston as well.

Z31 300ZX rear brakes could be a decent upgrade.
They share the same pads as the 240SX, but have a 42mm piston.

'84-86 Z31 uses a 290mm solid rotor, which came in both 4-lug and 5-lug.
'87-89 Z31 uses a 282mm vented rotor, in 5-lug.

I got some from the junkyard to tinker with. I hoped they would line right up as the other OEM Nissan brake swaps, but unfortunately it seems spacing would be necessary.
Another issue would also be figuring out a way to hook up the handbrake lever. However, the mechanism is close enough to the 240SX setup, and I think it can be done with a bit of work.

What I would like to know is if you can use the FCs 4piston front calipers on a 240sx

Also, on YAJ there seems to be an abundance of brackets to adapt the stock S-chassis calipers to various 300+mm rotors.
Perhaps someone on this side of the ocean will knock them off.

Why not just space out the factory 240 caliper on a larger disc?

They appear to be the standard OEM Sumimoto calipers, same as Z32/R32, R33, etc. Do they have larger pistons or something? Otherwise, I would rather have my calipers say Nissan on them.

They do look similar to the Z32/R32 calipers that's why I asked. I always seem to find FC 4piston calipers while all the Z32s have been stripped of all the good stuff

Sounds like a lot of work . But I can take pics of both if you want maybe remove my rear caliper off my fd and put it on the s13 build car . Would be sick to fit the FD fronts on there also

Hey Matej, I was the one who originally figured out the Z31 brake setup and did an actual write up on FA. Codyace just ripped off my article and posted it here as his own. But I've had my stock caliper with a Q45 rotor on for atleast 4 years now with no problem. Any questions PM me and I can guide you through it. Although the whole write up is on FA under best of 240sx.

As a side note, would it be possible for an admin to put my name in codyaces rip off write up? That way give credit where it's due.

The Z31 brakes are actually on the opposite sides of the hub. This wasn't an easy swap idea. Already tried it.

S14 brakes are a better idea. Find my article on FA and you'll be in luck with every last one of these questions.

Actually, here:

http://www.freshalloy.com/showthread...ions-And-Parts

All the reading you can enjoy. I put tons of effort into this years ago. I have the best brake setup going as far as effectiveness and being cheap/OEM.

Oh and for those that bought the 87-89 bracket, those are vented and will not work with the setup I found which works for non vented discs. That's why some dumb people have their brake pads falling out.

The 330mm kit that MAX sells is a great idea. However, to be honest I would prefer it to be a simple OEM-looking rotor, instead of fake two-piece. Plus the price is a bit out there. Although 326 Power sells the same kit at twice the cost.
ビッグブレーã‚*ãƒ*ーター ã‚*ット Brake Rotor Upgrade - POWERED BY MAX

On YAJ there are kits for a 302mm rotor, but I am not sure what car the rotor is from. Most likely something not readily available here, or custom. And they actually cost even more than the MAX kit.

I posted it above. But I'll post it again:

My brake setup now is:

front:
q45 mounting bracket with altima calipers
Carbotech pads(q45 obviously)
(yes altima calipers will fit on q45 mounting bracket. Just have to be creative with the slider pins)
This gives me a thicker rotor and not so much piston surface area so the brakes don't lock up as bad.

Rear:
z31 mounting bracket with stock s13 rear caliper.
92 Q45 rotor
Carbotech pads
