tension rod bushing install

my tension rod bushings are shot and i picked up some polyurathane bushings to put in the stock rods. can anyone give me a quick rundown on removing the bushings or link me to and install guide somewhere? i have the rods out already, just have to swap the bushings.thanks

Easiest way... drop them off at your local machine shop. Otherwise you may be able to get it in with a vise...most likely a hydrolic press will be needed. You can either press, burn, or cut the old one out.

If you want I can press them out and place the new ones in for you. I'm in San Marcos though and I won't be able to do it until the weekend. LMK asap. I have a press here at home.

to tell you the truth - when we did it on my old S14... we used a hammer + chisel. Used the chisel to dent the outter metal ring on the bushing and then a hammer to pound it out. The new one slides in like butter if you use enough grease.

A shop that will press out the old one is likely a better idea though.

A press is way easier to use, but you can beat/cut/burn/drill them out with enough force and patience. How you go about it is really up to what tools you have available and how much time you have.

you can do it with a big vice and small pieces (just wider than the t/c itself) of 2.5" and 3" exhaust pipe

i did it with a hammer and a screw driver ala dapcwiz method.

it takes about 5 minutes.

1. set the old bushings on fire (propane torch)
2. wait until it melts, then cut out all the junk
3. use a hacksaw to saw off the two inner metal rings and tap them out with a flat head screw driver
4. lube up the new bushings, and press them in using a vice (I used wood clamps to get them partially in, then beat them with a mallet).
5. insert the metal sleeves into the middle of the bushings.

it took me 3 hours because I didn't have any tools and I had to run around places looking for them.

just to clarify.

there's a metal ring around the stock oem bushing. get something thin and strong and pound it in between that metal ring and the t/c rod wall. then pry it to bend it away from the t/c rod a bit. do it in a few other spots.

if you're having problems prying you can burn out the bushing with a torch. i only had to do this on one side.

then, hit that bitch with a hammer and it should pop right out.

ur all about the spending, eh?

5 minutes with a hammer and chisel
-or-
drive out 10 minutes, pay the $20-$60, wait for it to get pressed out, drive your ish back home, and then spend the time to put it together.
5 minutes sounds good to me + it's helluva fun beating on it.

seriously. they come right out if you have a big vice and some scrap exhaust piping. If not, I'd do the hammer and chisel method. These are the easiest bushings to replace. If you no tools or workspace, then maybe I'd take them to a machine shop.

thanks for the offer. i think i am good to go though and should be able to get them out.
