s14 SR20DET Starting problems - Pictures (Searched)

OK well I tried to start my car up today for the first time after swapping my s14 SR20det into my 1989 s13.

I got my headlights and signal lights and all of that working fine. I can hear my fuel pump turning on when I turn the key. I even hear the cliking noise from the starter. There doesn't seem to be any spark from the coilpacks.

My questions for now:

1. Because my o2 sensor is not hooked up at the moment (I just need to extend the wires), will this cause my engine from not starting? Because I thought it would start, but it would just not be able to rev high.

2. How do I check my ignitor chip to see if its broken or not? Do I use an ohmmeter?

3. Everytime I turn the key to try and start my car up, am I flooding my engine with gas? If so, would a good idea be to take out the fuse for my fuel pump temporarily until I can get spark to the fuel that is already in the line?

I will be extending that o2 sensor tomorrow and rechecking my ingnitor chip wires as well. I will post pictures tomorrow when I have a chance, but for now if anyone could just answer those simple questions above - that'd be super.

Get the O2 sensor hooked up first. Is your starter kicking on. The click is the solenoid, but is your starter actually turning over. You car wont spark until everything is in motion. Starter, crank, cas and spark. Make sure you also have a good charge 12+ volts on the battery. You can drain them pretty easy when your trying to start your car a bunch of times.

1. Hook up the o2 your car will start with out it but its necessary to run right.
2. Work your way back. You can check for a signal though the ignitor but make sure your car is turning over first then work your way back from the spark plugs.
3. If you car is turning over and the starter is working then your car is dumping fuel in the engine. Flooding will follow.

you can check your ignitor with a circuit test light, hook the test light to the POSITIVE battery cable, unplug the ignitor plug that ends up going to your coil packs, or just leave it connected and stab through the insulation. while someone's cranking over the car you should be getting ground pulses through the ignitor which supply the ground to each of your coils and make the coils fire. if you're not getting ground (your test light is not flickering) pulse AFTER the ignitor, then check that the ecu is giving it ground on the wires BEFORE the ignitor, if it is getting the signal from the ecu, then yeah your ignitor's bad. if the ecu's not giving it anything, then assuming your ecu is good, and the wiring's correct, the ecu doesn't know the engine is spinning over because it's not getting a reference from the cam angle sensor, aka replace cas. good luck.

is the car turning over? or just clicking? big difference.

how do you know its not getting spark?

the only way to test for this is take each coil pack out, one at a time, and hold it about 1/2" from a grounded surface with spark plug in the end, while a friend cranks the car over. the spark should arc to the grounded surface. i just use my valve cover.

but if your engine isnt even turning over, fix that first. most likely the starter if the solenoid is clicking.

No I haven't checked the FSM yet. I will later tonight. I got a 12v test light like you said and will look for continuity through my ignitor chip. I will also check to see if my fuel lines are crossed or not. And I will check to see if my coil packs are grounded to the firewall.

I'll be back in a little bit and let you guys know how it turned out.

I didn't want to hijack it, but I will also look closely to his results.

As for the o2 sensor, I am not sure if I should be rearranging the wires when I extend them because on the SR harness the wires are:
black
white
thick white



and the o2 sensor wires are:
thin white
black
thin white




Correct me if I am wrong, but to my understanding.. the o2 sensor plug is the one right beside the coilpack plug?

OK i got good news and bad news.

Got my car started tonight by myself!! I am happy and proud.

But...

I noticed oil coming out of my intercooler piping.. therefore I think my turbo is toast.

Poor engine has been bagged on..

I guess I will have to get a new turbo.. and a exhaust manifold and downpipe and all of that stuff while I am at it... since I am broke and all.

hopefully this is the only problem
