Rebuild for KA-T?
Since my car got totalled out, I've been thinking about getting another KA, and rebuilding it while I am waiting for the insurance company to finish up what they're doing until I can get my money and make a new car.
I was curious about rebuilding a KA for a T28 set up. I already have planned to get Cometic 91mm Headgasket http://www.frsport.com/index.php?tar...52d7f989daaf52 New timing chain kit http://www.frsport.com/index.php?tar...52d7f989daaf52 New gaskets EVERYWHERE http://www.frsport.com/index.php?tar...52d7f989daaf52 ARP Headstuds http://phase2motorsports.stores.yaho...rphekitka.html New intake manifold gasket/spacer (Dunno if this is really necessary ![]() http://phase2motorsports.stores.yaho...pthingaka.html The questions I had were are there AFTERMARKET rebuild parts? Bearings? Piston rings? Anything else you can think of? If you do think of anything, please reply with a link, or contact that you know of so that I can get it/ get it for cheaper ![]() I am not going to get new con rods or pistons because that's a little too much for me right now, plus I'm NOT trying to make 400+ HP. I just want something that'll be good for the street *DAILY* and for occasional track reliability, meaning I can drive it to the track, beat on it, and expect very minimal issues. This is my first time buying anything related to the engine. I'm new at it so give me a break if my list seems a little newbie. ![]()

i don't know about cheap, but you can go on ka-t.org to savage some parts on their FS or WTB threads.

Timing and gaskets, Whole front cover but the oil pump:
http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan...de=S13-TBKITA2 -Oil Pump -ARP head studs -Felpro/OEM Headgakset. Rather have this fail then the bottom end. It's going to be a lot cheaper to break it down to the short block and rebuild the top end and front cover then to journey into the bottom end.

Even though you're not looking to make 400+ hp, it wouldn't be all bad to look into some forged slugs for peice of mind, the rods are good to 350whp+, but one bad knock and your ringlands are done for. With a really good tune people can get away with stock rings + pistons. It's just what I would do and you get a bunch of extra leeway for when you want to up the boost or find a bigger turbo. And +1 for the felpro headgasket/ gasket set. Cometic, depending on which one can be a pain in the ass to get it to seal. Just torque the felpro with the arp studs and you'll be fine.
Plus I've got some arp head studs for ya ![]() Edit: didn't read right, saw you didn't want pistons... My advice still stands.

Friend of mind have the AMS kit.. He swaped out the SR and change to KA N/A for DD. Will is not fast... then turbo.. but still if you plan for a DD I think the kit on AMS is pretty good. I am also about to rebuild my KA maybe with T not sure... will KA N/A still fun. |

Try contacting UMSPORTS on here. He sells complete rebuild kits, or parts of it.
Cometic MLS gaskets are notorious for leaking on the KA, to solve this is get ARP head studs and torque them down to 80ftlbs not the 65ftlbs thats recommended. Im running an intake manifold spacer gasket, my intake manifold is quite cooler to the touch than before, not sure if its helps but it gives you that piece of mind ![]() Just run Clevite bearings, theyre fine. Theres no pistons rings you can put on to help the pistons because the ringlands are the weak point, not the rings themselves. I used stock block KA @12psi on a S14 t28 on 91octane with Enthalpy ECU, S15 480cc injectors, FMIC and z32maf but the piston ring lands couldn't hold up to the Cali heat in the summer. 91 octane realllllly sucks. I really recommend going with atleast some pistons of somesort. $450 to save you a shit load of trouble later on. I just ran at the track on a Gti-R t28 @12psi this past wednesday and I ran a 13.2@113 consistently. This is with bolt ons ofcourse also with no traction. |

You do not need to build the motor for ka-t. If you do not want anywhere near 400whp, do not waste your money. If you are toasting your motors at 300whp, you either are boosting a motor that was not in good enough condition for it, your tune is off, or the car is not being properly maintained.
Get: Felpro Gasket Kit OEM Timing Kit, and Oil Pump Water pump and T-stat OEM Headgasket(the cometic will be more of a hastle then it is worth, especailly if you do not have it) Clevite/OEM or other bearings valve job while head is off give it a little clean up OEM piston rings replace other parts as needed The spacer, I am not to sure on how well they work, I am going to put one in my KA-T car next time I get the Intake Manifold off, Thats about all I can think of at the moment
