I sanded mine down good. filled the holes i didnt need, cleaned it all, hit it with a sealer primer, sanded it again and shot it with a couple of coats of base and a couple of coats of clear. first time painting too. turned out pretty good.
only pic i have of the bay:  do it right and take everything out. painted brake lines and wiper motors are gross.
