i don't understand how any of you think swapping the vin is still a good idea.

swapping the plate is just as illegal as having a mismatched vin and carries a harsh penalty.

yeah it's doubtful the police would pick up on it, but the legitimate proper procedure is so stupid easy.

call CHP and get the vin inspector.
show them new dash + receipt.
they stamp your car with a new vin
install new dash with the mismatched vin

done, and you just saved yourself from the risk of a fucking felony conviction, huge fine, and imprisonment.
