tightening up steering
So after putting coilovers on, I notice that there is a ton of slack in my steering (there always has been, it's just more noticeable now). In other words, there's very slow response and I can move the wheel around without moving the car.
What is the best way to correct this problem? Any help would be appreciated. |

Usually starts with changing tires/wheels. Theres a rubber bushing replacement from Circuit sports that will replace it with a full aluminum piece. Getting harder steering rack bushings, from energy or megan.

Yanack solid steering rack bushings
Circuit Sports solid column bushing SPL Pro outer tie rod ends OEM Z33/32 inner's If you got the money and depending how bad your rack is, replace it with a rebuilt Hicas unit.

i have a hicas rack and rack bushing...the bushings stiffen the steering up and the rack makes it more responsive because it has a quicker ratio over stock. still wont feel like an S2K though but a BIG improvement over stock.

also, what's your alignment? i noticed big changes in steering feel with different toe settings.
it's never going to feel like an S2K, one's a new $35K sposts car and one is a '90 cheap sports coupe.

I'm not sure if our racks have them but you might want to adjust the worm gear preload.

Rack Bushings are like foam rubber. Get some Urethane ones and it makes a world of difference.

Also check to make sure the joint on the rack that bolts to your steering column isn't coming loose. Mine started to once and it made the steering feel like what you're saying.

The steering wheel is directly connected to the tie rods. The bushings keep the rack steady for more stability. Its the ratio which counts.
check your ball joints. |

An alignment wont help. If there is play in the steering wheel its either the FLCA ball joints shifting around or the tie rod ends shifting around on the spindle. Everything else is directly connected, unless his tires are sloshing around. |
