basil is more common, but some places do offer mint (or at least its a spice that seems to resemble mint or spearmint). although I like basil in maybe other dishes, I don't put any or very little depending on the broth. most pho broth is already sweet. Cilantro can sometimes work very well, depending on your taste.

Playing with the spices/garnishes, and modifying the broth to a certain degree is part of the fun in eating pho.

when i go to my local pho spot, i always add a little bit of chunky sriracha, smooth sriracha, and oyster sauce. i'm straight off the pepper paste.

toss in some green shit a few bean sprouts and good to go!

LOL. It has like big pieces of pepper and pepper seed in it. Tastes a little differnt too. I don't think it's actually sriracha.

I had pho a couple days ago. This thread makes me want some right now. I know there are a couple 24 hour pho places around here, I think in Westminster? I had pho at 2 in the morning. Awesome. =)

the chunky one is the same thing as the smooth one except it has garlic and whole chili pepper seeds. they are both the same brand.

i use it mainly for cooking though.

Oh damn. Usually the places I go to have the "chunky sriracha" in an unmarked bottle. So I thought it wasn't the same. My stomach just grumbled. haha.
