Basketball and biking keep me in shape.

Why would I ever want to get out of my comfort zone, I'm trying to stay in it.

No, I don't see what you did there, I've never thrown an entire paycheck into my car.

Try it? You're forced to join track or cc when you're on the basketball team to get in shape before the season starts.

It sucked.

Different strokes for different folks I guess man, I hated running when I was forced to do it as well, but when I started doing it on my own and seeing the added benefits and enjoyment it brings me from going out and getting away for a while brings me a sense of accomplishment. Like doing a distance you never thought you could do, but I'm not here to convert you or anyone else into a runner, its a thread for people who enjoy running or might want advice on running as well.

Also that analogy of people spending their entire paychecks on their cars wasn't a personal bash towards you, it was referring to people that only think of cars as a means of transportation, that wouldn't get why someone would modify a car. So if you took offense its only because you were expecting to be offended.

I really thought this thread would be alive... Anyways to keep it going, I just bought me a pair of the Vibram Five Fingers KSO. I really wanted to get my feet use to them but I couldn't resist. So I went on a medium pace 5k run to see how they would hold up. I actually like the way they hold up. Towards the last mile of the run I started pushing myself to go faster and was surprised that I kept going for that long. Yes, I know I shouldn't have ran in them right away but I was a little too excited about them. I give these a 2 thumbs up.

Another questions, is anyone taking any supplements for running? If so what and why?

I have been taking Oxydrene and they seem to be giving me that extra boost and stamina. For those that don't know what Oxydrene does, it is a deep tissue oxygenator. It helps muscle cells better utilize oxygen necessary to maintain energy, stamina, and endurance. It also improves recovery markers and optimize muscle recuperation cycle.

Running is the shit. You just get into the zone and have time to think about whatever.

Plus the endorphin rush is nice.

and plus staying fit for the females.

I'm glad you bumped this thread back up, I've been out for a few weeks, fractured my foot but am getting back into it. Like I said before listen to your body, if it starts telling you "slow the fuck down i'm hurting" you might want to listen lol. Anyways back on topic it looks like I'll be restrengthening myself back up, I'm starting to think that energy drinks may be a culprit to me feeling older than I should. I drink plenty of water and usually have an energy drink a day and it seems that lately my chances of injury have gotten greater, lol I got a muscle spasm in my back doing pullups of all things and i do those every damn day. Be careful guys, but have fun, anybody looking to do some local marathons or runs anytime soon? I'm thinking of training for the san diego rock n roll marathon this year.

Ya speaking of issues I have been dealing with Siatica caused by a bulged disc. I don't even remember how it happened. It has reduced me to doing 3-5 mile walks twice a day, half uphill half downhill. I just switched out of my street Addidas for my Saucony's ( favorite running shoe). I noticed quite a pickup in walking speed. I honestly have to admit the desire to run is coming out. Though I am not quite out of the woods with the nerve shit so no running even if I want to.

I used to love/hate running. I was a sprinter through middle/high school, and occasionally have me do a mid distance run. 400m dash was the worst race ever and I would always want to puke. At one point I was doing sub 5 minute miles, but now I'm 5'11'' and ~175lbs so that's prob. not happening.

I've been thinking about trying to do a half marathon this summer. I actually work at Nike so that's a huge plus. If anybody has any questions about the shoes, what kind of shoes, etc. feel free to ask.

But everybody should definitely invest in a pair of Nike Frees. And they should read the bare foot running book 'Born To Run', it is very interesting and explains the whole idea of how running shoes have essentially become a crutch for our feet and by easing into the whole bare foot ride thing, it helps prevent injuries throughout our legs.

Those Vibrams look very cool, but like I said, I work at Nike.

I hate running and the only reason I run is because we have mandatory PT. I have high arches and have always had issues with my lower back hurting after running. I've been a consistent 11:15 + or - 15 seconds mile and a half runner. I started running on vibrams about 6 months ago. Sucked the first couple months since I had to train/force myself to run "tippy" and land on the front of my feet instead of the heel. Once I got used to it, I noticed that I run a faster pace, up hills are easier (first couple weeks are hell on your calves) and my back doesnt hurt. Surprisingly, the impact running on these are not as bad as I thought they would be. Its not exactly comfortable running on them (socks help tho) but I have no pain what so ever the moment I stop running. I used to have back pain and some knee pains half the day after running with running shoes. Also, I shaved almost 30 seconds on my run test down to 10:40 mile and a half.

What model of the Vibrams do you have?
Cool to hear that your time decreased. I very low 11's during the test and want to decrease my time more. I might just give these a try. Been interested in them for a while.
Has your command ever given you any shit about them? I just asked some of the army cats that I'm deployed with about them, and I guess their command released a policy letter banning them due to them being a "fad". Whatever haha

I've got the treks. Or atleast I think that's what they're called. Green and grey ones. Lol. Took a while to get used to them. I almost gave up on them haha. I went from a 9:50 1.5 to 9:35. The only thing that sucks is that grass and pokey shit still get on the inside. Ha

Yes, the Army banned them in TRADOC environment (basic training and AIT), you have to consent with your Commander about them and they are not allowed on the APFT because they give an advantage to those that use them. The Air Force Banned them completely in Afghanistan but you must consent your Commander if you can wear during the test, contradicting? In the Navy, you not allowed to wear them completely. The Marines say hell yeah you can wear them. Here's the link:
On your toes - Military Off Duty, Army Health, military fitness, army physical fitness - Army Times

I really hope this all changes soon. I'm in the Army and in that article our Sergeant Major of the Army is thinking about using them in a marathon.

One another note, is anyone thinking of trying the Merrell ones or the upcoming New Balance MT10s? The new balances are coming out in March, and they look like regualr shoes. I might try those out and start using them during PT. As of right now, I don't think I'll get away with wearing my VFFs during PT.

I used to run 5-8 miles back when I was in shape..weighed 135lbs @ 5'7". Usually I'd run in the middle of the day when it's hottest using my Shox. I can't run 2 miles nowadays since beer, bud, and school got in my way. I'm getting back into the game though...gonna pick up some of those 5 fingers shoes soon...we'll see though. I weigh 165lbs now lol.

I hate running too unless it's like 90F+ outside. Just kinda bugs me when it's cold out lol

The rock n roll marathon is on june 5th, they have both a half marathon and full marathon as well. This one would be my first so hopefully I can train up to it in time.
Here is one of the sites so others can check em out as well
http://san-diego.competitor.com/
http://www.runningintheusa.com/race/List.aspx?State=CA
http://www.getsetca.com/running-calendar.php

Mind you these are just CA specific links, but all of the websites will show you events for other states as well. Let me know whats up xsidewayzx, it'd be cool to have a running partner or just someone to maintain goals with

I used to run wayyyyyyyyy back in High School (2 years ago) and I liked it. Feels good. I've been telling myself that I'm going to go back out for the last year.

I still haven't gone out.

i'm trying to get into it. i just bought these:

i ran 1.3 miles the first day i got the shoes (run/walk mix), but it snowed 9" the next day, and there is slushy shit all over the place. i have not gone out since because i don't want to get my new shoes all shitty.

edit: i'm 5'8", 160ish (haven't been on a scale in a while). trying to get down to 150 and just lean out. started august '09 at 205, and that wasn't my heaviest..
