I typically try to focus on setting a couple specific checkpoints on my runs, and an average time I should be around at each checkpoint. Lets say on my run there is a stop sign/tree/ fire hydrant, pretty much any landmark and lets say at a steady pace I will be at this check point by 3:00, each time I go for my run I will try to get to that point faster and faster. You can do this multiple times on your runs and after a while it really isn't too difficult to keep track of your checkpoints. That is one way I have increased my speeds, another method I was taught is meant to be pretty exhausting, but so is increasing your running speed. This method is relatively simple but involves full effort at the sprints. Basically you will sprint 80-90% for :30 seconds, once you get done with your sprints you will ease into a good jog of about 50-60% for 1:00 minute after you will go back into sprints, repeat this cycle for 10-12 sets or more if you'd like. One thing is you will know if you are putting out or not and its alot better to do if you have someone to compete with.

Thanks...I was also told to put weight on myself and just run 4 to 5 miles 3 times a week. Tried it for a month and cut a full minute off my time.

Be careful where you're putting that weight. Ankle weights are generally a bad idea as they could lead to brief hyperextension of your leg joints.

you can always get one of those mini parachutes that sprinters use to increase speed, i don't have any personal experience with them, but I can imagine how much wind resistance would help to increase your speed.

Basketball and biking keep me in shape.

Why would I ever want to get out of my comfort zone, I'm trying to stay in it.

No, I don't see what you did there, I've never thrown an entire paycheck into my car.

Try it? You're forced to join track or cc when you're on the basketball team to get in shape before the season starts.

It sucked.

Different strokes for different folks I guess man, I hated running when I was forced to do it as well, but when I started doing it on my own and seeing the added benefits and enjoyment it brings me from going out and getting away for a while brings me a sense of accomplishment. Like doing a distance you never thought you could do, but I'm not here to convert you or anyone else into a runner, its a thread for people who enjoy running or might want advice on running as well.

Also that analogy of people spending their entire paychecks on their cars wasn't a personal bash towards you, it was referring to people that only think of cars as a means of transportation, that wouldn't get why someone would modify a car. So if you took offense its only because you were expecting to be offended.
