will nismo exhaust fit ka24de? HELP!
i just recently bought a nismo cat back exhaust for my s13 hatch. i have a 96 ka24de in it and i tried to put the nismo exhaust on and its short about a foot.
i have megan headers and a sr20 down pipe. do i need a test pipe to make it fit? or does it not fit on ka engines only srs? |

Ka and SR are interchangeable. Did you remove your catalytic converter?
Sounds like you did, and that is causing that extra foot of gap. Also, I don't recall Nismo ever making an exhaust for 240sx. Mind sharing where you got it from? I suspect it's a knockoff. |

I have a nismo exhaust on my s13 ka24de. Fits fine with no problems, I have stock headers, stock down pipe and a cat. You definitely need a cat or testpipe to complete it. Heads up though just cause it's oem does not mean it's quiet, even with the resonator it's pretty loud cause it's 3in piping all the way on a N/A.

oh okay. yeah i was thinking on getting a resonator test pipe to make it purr. the exhaust i have now is loud ass shit only has a cat and the muffler.
if the extra resonator doesnt qiet it down more ill get a high flow cat. |

Example: Take a typical 2.5" Ebay fencepipe/fart-can catback... LOUD AS FUCK!!! Then compare that to a 80mm, JASMA-certified, HKS Super Dragger... If you ever heard one, the are VERY quiet... almost OEM-sounding- With a nice growl at WOT; but not even remotely close to as obnoxious as the smaller-diameter fart-can. My exhaust is a 3" (76mm) 5-Zigen... Very well-resonated & unassuming until I open it up. Even then, it sounds great... But I can still carry on a conversation at 90mph without having to shout.

A 3" exhaust will be louder on a KA than a SR20DET. So, yes piping diameter does have something to do with overall sound level. It is not the primary determining factor, but it does affect it. The muffler/piping diameter was designed to produce a certain sound level with a certain amount of exhaust flow. When you reduce that flow it affects the sound level to a certain extent.

^^agree to disagree.
A 1", 2" or 2.5" , 4" or any other exhaust will be louder on a KA than an SR too. So how exactly does the piping diameter make a difference? I promise you, my exhaust is 3" and fairly quiet... and it will outflow a loud-ass 2.5" fart can with less resonating/muffling all day long. There is a difference between engine design that comes into play there- apples & oranges. Now, if you are saying that 2 identical exhausts... one @ 2.5" & one @ 3" with the exact same resonating/muffling system are put side by side; the 3" will actually be quieter... the one with the bigger piping will theoretically be louder because it flows better; but that isn't the case. MagnaFlow Performance Exhaust - FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions Increasing the diameter of the piping actually decreases the velocity of the exhaust flow because the engine isn't working as hard to push it out due to less back pressure. End result will be a quieter, deeper tone all things being equal.

these posts are all very informing. so what do you guys think.
my nismo exhaust has the muffler and the resonator. should i add a high flow cat to it or a resonated test pipe OR just a stright test pipe? i want a deep quiet sound from it. im not turbo. |

You have a KA, why in the hell don't you have a cat??? The whole point of staying KA is to pass smog. You're not gaining any measurable amount of HP by removing the cat, you're just making your life hard for smog time. I always laugh at people that remove smog equipment from their KA's, shit is pointless...

This discussion has nothing to do with engine design, it has to do with exhaust flow. No apples and oranges here. The one argument you could make on that is that the turbo muffles the exhaust noise, which is theoretically possible, but the turbo produces some noise of it's own as well. Are you an exhaust engineer? It seems to me that you're just spouting an opinion and presenting it as fact with no technical evidence to back it up. You're taking this much more technical than is necessary. The bottom line is that an exhaust that is quiet on an SR will not be so quiet on a KA... |

It's not hard, or expensive, to find a smog guy that can let you slide on the visual inspection as long as the car passes the sniffer test. It is getting progressively harder and more expensive to have the car clean-piped...

From my experience from what I had on, the bigger the pipe the louder the tone. I had a 2" OEM, then 2.5" HKS high power, and now currently the 3" Nismo exhaust. They are all quality exhaust with resionators on them. I was really hoping the nismo was quieter than the HKS BUT I was wrong.

I am not an exhaust engineer- But apparently; I am a hell of a lot smarter than you on the physics of sound waves travelling thru piping than you are. Last time I checked, you were the guy who said "A 3" exhaust will be louder on a KA than a SR20DET." Way to go, Captain Obvious. Please enlighten me as to how that has anything to do with how loud exhaust flow is with respect to piping diameter. That particular tidbit was a comparison between the amount of sound 2 different engines will put out... APPLES AND ORANGES. ^^Now THAT was spouting off... Just so you know the difference ![]() The REAL bottom line is that piping diameter & bends play a big part in the note; and I will concede a minor part in the intensity of the sound... and if there were NO resonators, mufflers etc; the smaller diameter exhaust would be louder... not the bigger one like Zzz89 was thinking. It's still the resonators & mufflers that determine the overall volume in decibels. ...and BTW I can make this is technical as I see fit... This IS the tech section, yea? ![]()

Zzz89, it's not the quality of the mufflers/resonators in question since you have all quality stuff... It's HOW they are designed to interact with the sound waves as they pass.
However, in general; bigger piping is actually quieter.

I just recently put the OEM exhaust back on and at idle up to about 3500rpm the OEM and HKS are about the same. Quote:
Like Mikester said they a very quiet at highway speeds, but when you go WOT they have a nice growl. No fartcan sound. |

are high flow cats carb legal? i just dont see the need in paying close to 200 for a smog if i dont have huge horsepower.
whats your opinion on a magnaflow cat? if high flow cats are CA legal then ill go for catco or magnaflow. |

^^A lot of Magnaflow produts are not CA-legal. You said it best... If you aren't making big power, no need for anything other than a stock cat. Easy peasy.
