Thinking About Building my Sr. What do you think?
Hey everyone havent posted much but i thought id try.
So i have a kouki s14 with sr20det Mods already gt2871r .64 Ar Garret Power fc Standalone with controller Fmic Setup Blitz SBC RB25Maf coils clutch etc really focusing on engine mods. So i got alittle extra $$ and was thinking about finishing my engine to its full potential s14 sr20det BTW i was thinking of purchasing these on enjuku tomei poncams 256/256 drop in ARP Headstuds tomei headgasket 1.2mm tomei 555cc injectors AEM wideband Ngk BKR8e iridiums all together run me around 1500$ not too bad My car has always been stock 7lbs on the gt2871r and is still pretty fast runs good no problems MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU... Do u guys think it would be worth spending the money to upgrade my car? For the amount of money im spending (~1500) do u believe im getting the most potential out of what i have? or is there a better setup/parts i should order instead of what ive chosen? would it be cheaper to pay someone to install everything and tune it, or do install Myself and sell the Power FC and Buy rom Tune? Do u think with this setup i could reach my goal of 350hp? Any other commentary or questions is awesome Thanks Guys |

I used to run a 2871r, awesome turbos for stock location. So to not follow my blown HG footsteps I'd recommend those head studs and better HG (I like apex but don't have experience with tomei) before you crank up the boost passed 1bar. Not sure how far the 555cc injectors will get you either, for the same price you might as well get 740cc imo. Cams make a huge difference as well, really open up the SR, I highly recommend again. But it's really up to what you want. You can make about 300whp on stock cams with that turbo on pump gas. And you can squeaze out 400whp at 22-24psi with cams and a good tune, I did. Then again I was also in that area where factory piston ring lands hate life. So again its all about what you wanna do.

I had stock cams, head bolts & HG, gt2871r .64a/r , z32 mafs, Nismo 740s, enthalpy tuned ecm, and 3" turbo back with no cat. I made 288whp on a mustang dyno at 18psi.
I switched to haltech ems, 22psi w/external WG, 110oct gas, JWT S4 cams and made 399whp on the same dyno. Then popped the stock HG a month later. 350whp (mustang #s)with a .64 2871 on stock cams is going to require some work. I'd like to see that be done with that crappy internal WG those turbos come with. This was like 7yrs ago so maybe its changed.

Lastly get the 740cc or higher for injector, 555s or whatever will note you fast especially since you have a nice turbo.

I've got a barely used set of HKS step 1 256 / 264 vtc cams I'll sell you for $400. Way better than tomei cams. Look them up and pm me if you're interested.
My car made 355whp at 18psi using a .64 2871r Nismo 555cc injectors and these cams. |

horrible idea to rebuild the sr20det for many reasons. the stock engine is more than capable of handling that turbocharger at 18~ psi with a stock headgasket on stock camshafts.
Here is a mostly stock sr20det (with cams) I tuned back in 2011 on an AEM. ![]() Still running fine to this day, and I WARNED him that it will not last for 80,000 miles with that much power. He is trying to prove me wrong, still. max power I recommend for daily drivers stock engine sr20det is around 350rwhp and that is pushing it if you want to go 100,000 miles or more. If your power goals are over 350, it does NOT make sense to build the sr20det, for the same price and fewer headache you should just install an all original 2jz-gte and make 550rwhp for 150,000 miles and call it a day. Once you start to push a 2liter past 400~ rwhp with all but the most advanced setups, latest turbocharger designs and configurations, you no longer have a street car response. |

A gate is a gate, just a hole for exhaust to move through. If it is large enough and designed right, even if too small, you can compensate with engine configuration such as camshaft exhaust valve closing points (camshaft gear timing can assist your goals) but again, horrible idea on an SR20 because of the fact you need to remove the valvecover to modify camshaft setting, AS WELL as the looming crunch if the gears let loose. |

![]() OP, keep it simple and run your turbo on an external gate at 18lbs. You'll make your power, wont need to put in cams, and have a better powerband.

Also, I must have missed the part where EWG meant complicated plumbing...

External WG on the other hand, has to bolt somewhere. Hes going to have to WELD SOMETHING to SOMETHING ELSE to use it. Then, where will the exhaust get dumped? Again, now he needs to WELD AND FABRICATE more plumbing. Either way, the manifold would have to come off the car. Unbolt the downpipe. unbolt the turbo. Unbolt the manifold. Unbolt the lines. Hours of work... for nothing. hundreds of dollars for... nothing. Seriously, you didn't see that coming? |

Look just because you're scared of the unknown doesn't mean it's complicated or that you need to make up things.
Get a two bolt EWG that comes with the bracket or even v-band, have CodyAce (or someone else) weld the mount to a stock manifold or buy a mani for EWG. Add screamer pipe or route to DP. The last can be bolted on or done by a shop for little money. You're saying all that as if you don't have to unbolt anything for cams which is laughable. I mean just pop the new cams in and that's all that's to it, right? Oh and the external isn't all for nothing which I previously stated. The fact that I'm even responding to someone who contradicts themselves in one post is beyond me... "you can compensate with engine configuration such as camshaft exhaust valve closing points (camshaft gear timing can assist your goals) but again, horrible idea on an SR20 because of the fact you need to remove the valvecover to modify camshaft setting, AS WELL as the looming crunch if the gears let loose." Well done. Edit: Also if you think taking the turbo/exhaust mani is complicated then you should get out of 240s and into a Prius.

All you did is just repeated what I said, having to weld and fabricate and deal with plumbing. |

[QUOTE=Kingtal0n;5570419]cams are VERY easy to install following FSM proceedure. I just installed a set into a friend's redtop in < 30 minutes start to finish. There is no plumbing and no aftermarket hardware. QUOTE]
Then you proceded to list every minute step (some of which not even needed) for external gate. Listing nothing vs everything... smart.

I said it is easy. I said it takes 30 minutes. I said there is no plumbing. I said there is no aftermarket hardware.
I NEVER said there is nothing to unbolt. Unbolting a manifold, turbocharger, lines, downpipe, welding, plumbing, fabrication, is more work than installing 2 camshafts into sr20det engines. 30 minutes for camshafts can give you 50 horsepower. 3 days of work for an external gate with a 2871r gives you... 5 horsepower? sorry if you dont get that. |
