Ok, I've been trying to use driftaholic's guide.. here's what I've got so far.

I'm getting the hang of outlining kind of.. but I really suck at shadowing. Everytime I make a shadow I decide it's too big and blotchy and erase it so I've only got little shadows that look out of place here and there. Next time I'm picking a picture with more easily defined shadows and highlights.

hey that's not bad
yeah choosing pics with well defined shadows makes it a lot easier. i've noticed that professionally shot pics are also a million times easier to do than average people's digicam or scanned pics

Its not really a cartoon, but its done with Illustrator/Photoshop. I had fun making it. Its not perfect, but i like it.

I suck at this stuff, i spent 2 hours and i couldnt get the pen tool to just draw a line, it kept makin a shape. Driftaholic, can u plz be more specific and such? Im no photoshop junkie and need a few pointers here and there. Thx.

make your curve with the pen tool, right click and choose "stroke path." then you can choose which tool to stroke with. i use the bush on 2px. make sure to set the tool how you want it BEFORE stroking though.

If you have PS7...

Your problem is that you've got the shape thing selected on pen tool. Select the pen tool and then look up in the top left corner of the screen and the first option should be selected. It's called "Create shape vector" or something to do with shapes. You've got to click the second option up there, that will let you just draw lines. I'm sorry I don't remember what they're called and I'm too lazy to check in Photoshop cause it takes like 10 minutes to load.
