Mounted/Hidden Radar Detectors

I know people hide radar detectors in their bumper or dash or custom fit it, but why doesn't it interfere with the functionality if radar detectors are so sensitive? (I assume it does for some and doesn't for others.)
If I mounted my escort pasport 8500 in the dash, would that ruin it's functionality?

Has anyone else mounted a detector in the dash? Does anyone have pics? Where would it go/where have you put it to hide it.

Looking for some ideas / pictures here, not a whole radar debate schematic but just ideas for radar mounting other than a windshield mount...

whats the point of hiding it? to my knowledge, radar detectors are not illegal, radar jammers are. my radar detector says that it should be at a point where it can sense 360 degrees. if you mount it anywhere else, im guessing it wont be as effective.

Virginia & DC, they're fine in MD.

It would almost definitely affect the sensitivity/reliability if it were in the dash/trim. I'd get one meant to be installed if that's important to you. Or, maybe mount it up high by the top of the A pillar out of the way if that's good enough for you and run the remote display down.

They make detectors that are made to be hidden. You don't hide the dash mount.

I want to hide it because it's ugly and I don't like having it on my windshield.

Mounting it on the windshield by the A-Pillar and running direct wire down the pillar to ignition/fuse box is all good but I was going to try and put it somewhere less noticable and mount it in flush with the cars interior. It also comes with a warning light seperate from the detector with a mute button I was going to mount in the switch slots by the power mirror buttons.

So I was just wondering if it would be possible to mount it within the dash or trim and still have it work. I do realize there are slim radar detectors that are easily mounted. They are pimp shit but right now I have a $300 escort and not a $1500 Sr7 (thanks for the ref. DB)

If it is in the dash, it will not read well at all.

You're joking right? It's a radar dectector, it detects RADAR. If the officer in question doesn't have a radar gun, or it's not turned on, how in hell do you figure you're going to detect it?

i had mine a little bit above and behind my rear view mirror.. worked perfectly.. but they get annoying.. they will pick anything up that has and radar activity ie, ambulance, sensor detectors, etc.

Hell, they're even illegal for out of towners in VA, they have signs up right at the state line telling you so.
