this is some prty strange shyt, but my car dies on me for some reason. every now and then, when i start slowing down, the engine just dies for no reason. it's like it stalls, but i have the clutch all the way down.
does anyone kno why this happens? i've been told that manual transmissions do that once in awhile, but this car does it WAAAAY too often. plus, this never happens to my friends cars and it never happened in my old car. any help is greatly appreciated.

If your idle erratic as well? I would check vacuum hoses and cracks in the intake piping first.

idle is just fine, except the fact that it's at .5 (or 500, for those perfectionists) rpm. both of my gauges read wrong, as well. at least, i hope it's readin it wrong. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cry.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='

Yes, your car is idling low. Should be around 750rpm +/- 50..
Do you have an FSM? There is a detailed diagnotic process for the symptoms you described. I only noted the obvious stuff in my previous post. But if your not getting a check engine light, or your ecu isn't throwing a code then it is hard to say. Have you tried reading the codes off your ecu?

Try this:
Next time that you feel the engine starting to die, move the tranny out of gear. Put it in neutral. If it comes back up to normal rpm with the car in neutral, you have a bad clutch. It's common. Changing the clutch is a huge PIA and if you don't feel real comfy working on your car, pay someone to do it. Took me 5 hours to get mine out, and that was at a auto shop, had all the tools that I needed.

I've also read that a dirty IAA (idle air adjustment) valve can cause this when it gets clogged up. If cleaning the AIV doesn't help, try cleaning out the Intake system.

I don't know if my question realtes really or not, but every now and then, when I pull up to a light with the car in gear, and the clutch in, my rpm will drop like to about 600 from about 900, and the stick will be stuck in gear, and if i pull decently hard it kinda clunks and poops out, but then doesnt want to go back in without using like 4th first, and if I leave it in first when it is stuck, and let off of the brake pedal, it creeps forward sort of like an automatic. Any ideas? thanks
edit: might it be a bad TO bearing?

</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'> He didn't say that the car was in neutral. I just wanted to make sure that the clutch was disengaging. It's just as common for it to not engage as it is to not disengage. Well as far as the clutches on all the aerospace ground equipment that I work on in the Air Force. You might be right as far as a clutch in a car goes. All my experiance comes from working on diesel powered generators, huge a/c units, heaters, air compessors, and jet engines.Anyway, I know that this is an easy test that won't cost anything. Just trying to help the guy out! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() BTW I when I use the quote button, I must be missing something B/C I don't know how to get the original post name and date time in there. TIA!!

my '96 s14 is having the same problem right now... the car idles rough though occasionally. I can have it on cruise and the car bogs down sometimes. It has new plugs and wires, could it be the timing?

geeaj: FSM? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> please explain to this newB.
also, i don't kno if it's idling wrong or if my gauges aren't reading right. i drive down the freeway at 80, and ppl r passin me like crazy. my "check engine" light is on, but only when the engine isn't running (which is how it's supposed to be, right?). broadwayblues: i disengaged the clutch the last time it happened, and it died even quicker than it did when i left it in gear. but, that only happened about twice. the other times i did that, the rpm dropped all the way to 0 then bounced back up to .7-ish. changing the clutch won't be a prob, tho. i gots an uncle that'll do it for free. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() sykikchimp: this is a fairly normal problem for the 240?!? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/cry.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() anyway, thanx a bunch!

I would try cleaning out your throttle body and idle valve first. Try a good cleaner like AC Delco X-66A. Its a spray can. Just spray it all over the throttle plate and clean off the carbon, next spray it in the holes you see near the throttle plate. thats your idle valve. It will smoke like hell on start up so gas it a few good ones to clear it out. I do this on a lot of cars with a slow(lazy) idle and it works most times. I did one yesterday on a sentra that was idling roughly at 500 rpms. After I did it the idle went up to 800 in drive with a smooth idle.
