power steering (hear me out)
91 S13-sr20det blacktop (like it matters)
So I spent a little time looking through the power steering threads on this site, none of which fully helped me. My problem is when I did my SR swap I also flushed the PS system (took off a hose and pumped until no fluid came out). I swapped the SR pulley onto the KA pump and refilled with ATF. I then put the car on my lift and raised the wheels off the ground and went side to side while adding fluid per the FSM. Now my pump is loud, constant rattle and a loud grown when turning plus excessive turning force is required. The rack hard lines are not bent and I did spend a ton of time bleeding the air out of the system until it no longer lowered the fluid level. I seem to be doing all the right things without the right outcome. -Check lines -Bleed air -Use atf It is almost like there is still air in the system because when I turn the wheel almost to full lock (while on lift) it makes a pressure relieving sound that sounds like air bubbles which continues until full lock is reached. I have spent way too much time bleeding it and it doesn't seem to get any better. Am I missing something? Any tips? Thanks a ton guys. |

my guees is leaking line or connection. Did you put both washers back on the High pressure PS line?

is there a line pinched/clamped anywhere? maybe it went bad when you pumped until no fluid came out, where as you should have kept refilling it. maybe you messed up the pump?

make absolutely sure that you got all the air out of the lines. My friend's redtop PS pump died cuz he was too lazy to fill the reservoir after it was low (stupid huh?). It groaned and made terrible noises for weeks. When he got around to filling it again it was too far gone... apparently the fluid also works as some form of lubricant for the pump itself? I dunno.
What I DO know is that using it (especially lock to lock) when the fluid is low or gone will quickly kill your pump. Since helping troubleshoot that one, I've been pretty religious about making sure all my fliuds are topped off every time I put gas in. |

I'm pretty sure thats how I killed a friends ps at the track, I spun and went over a rumble strip, and the steering wheel went lock to lock because I let go of the wheel. BAM, no more ps, and had to be towed back because the car wouldn't start with the locked ps pump.

I am sure that no line is pinched. Also, I only ran it w/ no fluid for maybe one or two seconds. I then reconnected the hose, filled up the reservoir and began to bleed the air out. It isn't like I went for a long cruse through a parking garage w/o any fluid. The PS pump shaft (that the pulley is connected to) rides on bearings that look to be not in contact with PS fluid, but the pump fins look like they may be lubricated by PS fluid. I still get power assist when I rev the engine a little and turn the wheel; it is just very loud.
