Clutch or tranny gone bad......HELP!
yesterday as i was driving, the clutch pedal suddenly didnt come back up all the way, but i was still shifting fine. then it would pop back up, then not again. then a few minutes later, i would depress the clutch, but shifting got a hell of a lot harder. its almost like i wasnt using the clutch at all!....so i go back home, parked it for a couple hours and tried to drive it again. same problem for the first 2 mins or so, and all of a sudden, its all back to normal again!
what could be the problem? |

Wow , it's like we're twin brothers. Same thing happened to me like 3 days ago, did all the easy stuff first like replace master and slave cylinders, bled it forever. Nothing. Now I'm replacing clutch/pressure plate/throw out. =\

bleed the system, bypass the clutch dumper, check for leaks under the clutch pedal. If it's leaking, you'll see it.
BTW, bypass the clutch dumper. You can bleed the entire system in 5min. Oh... and do a search.. you'll find at least 20 threads dedicated to same problem.....

Check for cracks on your master cylinder and the lines that connect it to the clutch damper (if you still have it connected).
Try putting fluid in your clutch resevoir and see if the problem goes away. If the problem eventually returns it means that you're leaking fluid from somewhere which compromises the hydraulic integrity in the clutch system. |

Master cylinder has been known to bleed inside the car underneath the carpet. Check there if you're loosing fluid but can't see where it's going. Seen it happend a couple of times.

[flamesuit on] i took it to a mechanic. its a pretty trustworthy place i think. my friend's family has been going to them for years....i just dont have the tools, and even a place to work on my car. so i sorta had no choice.
anyway, mechanic said theyre replacing the master and slave clutch cylinders. for a total cost of $160. pretty cheap i thought. cuz i was expecting something in the neighborhood of $300. |

160 plus tax? I fixed it for less than $100 and that's w/ new rubber tube from slave-clutch damper, master and slave cylinder. All genuine Nissan parts. Brake fluids too.
It's an easy job. Lot of write ups and I've done it at my aptment around 2 in the morning to avoid security.... Also, it only takes few min to bleed the system after bypassing the clutch damper. Total of 40min job max w/ cigs brake:-D Save that money, go eat at nice restaurant and pat yourself on the back.

for people without 'the hookup' a regular master cylinder is $80 and slave is $50 from the dealership.
$160 labor included is damn cheap from a professional mechanic. assuming they're using new or at least rebuilt parts... you're not getting ripped off. |

I agree.
My girlfriend's Prelude had its master and slave cylinders replaced and it was somehwere in the neighborhood of $210-220, incl. labor. I would have done it myself but I was too busy at the time. Anyway, $160 for replacing both master and slave cylinders is an awseome deal. However... if you have the time and desire, do it yourself. It's not a difficult fix and if you're willing to go for something other than OEM parts from the dealership you can save a load of money. A clutch MC from NAPA costs ~$30 and a slave cylinder ~15. |
