apex n1 exhaust rattle

i recently installed a apex n1 exhaust on my 1990 240. Now every now and then i get this weird rattling sound.

i checked and the exhaust isn't touching anything, and I used nismo exhaust hangers so it stays pretty still even when i rev. i've racked my brain and i can't think of anything else to look for.

the rattling even starts when the car is just idling, everything is bolted tight and i even took the car to meineke and they can't find anything.

I just want to know if you guys have any suggestions before i end up removing the exhaust and putting back on the ricey obx one that i finally got rid of

It can be either the heat shield over the stock cat (or somehwhere around there) is loose. Or it may be the honeycomb has fallen out of the cat (as is the case with my car).

What kind of rattling is it? If it is a loud rattle with thumping vibrations, it is probably a bolt sticking out too far under the floorboard. It is one of the bolts that bolts your seat down so look in the exhaust tunnel right under your seat to see a bolt barely touching the exhaust. Look hard because it is not that obvious. Cut some of it off and enjoy. Good luck and I hope that is the solution to your problem.

i have the same problem and noticed this sound. Mine sounds like its a bad gasket somewhere cuz i kno its not touching the diff/swaybar/tow hook/hangers/seat belt bolt/anything else. I check for leaks and the gaskets but theyre all fine. Could it be a piece of metal from the resonator vibrating?

well, i checked all the heatshields and the towhook and i still haven't found the problem. i followed the piping to see if anything is touching and it isnt. what i don't understand is why it doesn't rattle all the time. why does the rattle stop and start?
I even thought that maybe there was something loose in my trunk, but i've got nothing.

Thanks for the help guys, i hope that eventually i fix this sh!t.

well the way i figure it, something rattles around, and then gets stuck and it gets quiet, and then so much more vibrations shake whatever it is loose again, and it starts rattling. thats why it only happens sometimes.

why dont you take off a portion of the exhaust at a time and see if the rattling is still present so you can locate whatever the source of the problem is.

Get a friend with a loud bass system to park next to you, thats one way to find pesky rattles. Trust me. lol.
