The blacktop SR20 is newer version of the motor.

Redtop --> 91-93 Silvia
Blacktop --> 94-98 Silvia

In terms of more power, the blacktop produces 15 more hp, yet the torque remains the same.

Redtop --> 205 hp, 203 torque.
Blacktop --> 220 hp, 203 torque.

But, as you most likely have already guessed, the Blacktop is more expensive. So it really depends on how much money you wish to spend.

There's also an S13 blacktop in later (94+?) 180SXs. No VVT on those, but different MAF, computer, etc.

Exactly...what black top are you talking about. There is a S13 red top and black top. The two motors are pretty much the same. The black top are in the 94+ 180sx.

The S14 SR20DET is also a blacktop but not the exact same as the S13 though it does has higher hp.  But what does it matter, that's what mods are for.  My concerns was having A/C and power steering.  If you have a S13 body then you should consider a motor out of the 180sx.  It makes things a lot easier.
