H.I.D.'s on a S13? Stock front end...

I just bought a 1990 240sx Fastback and I would like to put a set of H.I.D.'s for the headlights, now I'm new to 240's and I've done some research on them but cannot find anything, so do they make them for the flip up headlight's? Links or pictures to a site to buy them would be nice. Thanks Guys

Chris

please look at this link ...

http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.p...light=lighting

its a long thread explaining why its a silly idea - and dangerous - and ricer - and lots of reasons why u just plain shouldnt.

next time serach - and ye will find.

mostly - dont put HID lights in the front of ur 240 unless u retrofit housings into the stock stuff - you'll spend like 1000$ easy on that.

For HIDs youll need an H4 conversion, but HIDs in pop ups are gay because you'll hella blind incoming traffic.

Haha, thanks guys. I was just wondering about the HID's in the stock s13 flip ups... Im leaning towards buying a s13 Silvia front end conversion, Ill just do the HID kit on the Silvia front end, Anyone got links/ pics of a place that has good prices on the conversion front ends.

ok - thats even worse - there is no HID retrofit or housing made for that front... if u use HIDs in it you will blind people and still not be able to see... the silvia lights have hte worst cutoff/lighting ever - i know i had them for a long time and now went back to flipups

im guessing you didnt read through that link - or you would have read that all already.

you just plain shouldnt use HID's without an oem housing made for HID's. HID doesnt mean good... the link i gave you has some info there that you must have felt was unrelated. good housings and good bulbs make good lighting - not HIDs... they made those add in HID conversions illegal for a reason.

to post an exceprt from daniel stern lighting consultation...

When designing the optics (lens and/or reflector) for a lamp, the characteristics of the light source are *the* driving factor around which everything else must be engineered. If you go and change the light source, you've done the equivalent of putting on somebody else's eyeglasses: You can probably make them fit on your face OK, but you won't see properly.

here is the entire page since you didnt read through the last link (others might like htis - its good material and backed up everything ixfxi told me

Ya i had the same problem when i owned a 2002 Ford SVT focus, I had projectors on it and the lighting never really hit the road good. When i go for the silvia front conversion ima go with the halogen setup and not the projector style front lights.

only mike at clearcorners will be able to provide LHD silvia front's if you really want that...but it is still expensive.

all those front end conversions are made for RHD...

you can try this if you like it since you just need to find the right projectors and aim the correctly

http://phase2motorsports.stores.yaho...ni18hekit.html

ohh when i said lhd and rhd i was talkin about beam pattern

Bricks are even worse. It's still RHD "cutoff"/ beam pattern and they suck ass at lighting. Either stick with some quality H4s with good lights and updated wiring, or go Silviaprojectors up front with HID retrofit with OEM USDM projectors/HIDs.

I mainly want to convert the front end to the Silvia for the Looks of its, Lighting is nice, but isn't really much of my worrys. I'm not a drifter, i will not drift my 240. I'm building this one for the 1320 my friends. SR will come soon after the front end conversion.

I have HIDS in my pop-ups. Mine don't blind since I have LHD cutoffs. And yes they still go down. I just need to get bixenon bulbs.

who said anything about drifting? we're talking about you blinding my mom and her hitting a deer... and if u think HIDs in normal H4 housings are not blinding people - u r mistaken... theres a reason they're illegal.

either pay up for 1000+$ retrofitted TL or BMW housings fitted into your stuff or dont do HID. to quote our resident lighting specialist : "Modern type housings with a competition bulb or even a Good bulb with a harness will rival any proper HID"

then you arent driving the car on the street??? then wtf do you want HID's for? car shows? The problem isnt whether YOU can see... its whether you blind other people. If its a track car - you dont use the headlights anyway.

The track has its own lights...

I had one of those HID retrofit kits put on my very first s13 back in 2002. Still on the s13, lighting is better than stock and from experience it does not blind oncoming traffic.

Retrofits don't cost that much if you DIY. Prices have gone down from back in '03 when I actively retrofitted.

OEM Bulbs and Ballast = $200 tops.
Projectors $100-$300
Misc. $50 tops.

So there you have it. $350-$550+ for a retrofit. I personally snagged deals on ebay and got mine done with Lexus RX330 projectors for $200 (everything).

In the HIDplanet thread, the OP stated that he lost his flip-up function. Not good, because you know you'll get jacked! The best way to retrofit would be to stick a projector into the silvia double/triple projector housing. It's been done many, many times. I've seen 2.5" TSX projectors stuck in the silvia housing, but i'm personally going for the 3" ZKW / TL Hybrid projector. Hopefullllly it fits when I gather enough money. In the case of the silvia housings, since there is a seperate high beam, you don't need bi-xenon projectors. You can rock single xenon and still have a high beam.

Oh yeah, back when I retrofitted into a popup headlight housing, I had to
watch clearance from behind the headlight. This was on a 3rd gen prelude, however the concept is still the same. Aside from space constraints, another major problem you'll have is HEADLIGHT SHAKE. I haven't personally examined the assembly, but i'm sure that old 240's will have loose and/or worn out parts in the retractor assembly, so the beam flickers up and down. Combine this with the sharp cutoff of an HID projector, and you've got trouble. Aside from the fact that it looks like you're constantly high-beaming people, you'll attract attention from the police.
Bad attention.
Really.

retrofit this

it looks like terdsauce, and this guy isnt going to retrofit the Silvia lights anyways...

he doesnt car if his car sucks - so why should we (cept for the fact hes gonna blind someones mom and shes going to hit a tree)...

he wont do any of this stuff anyway... if hes building a 240 for drag - whatever... i think its all a pipedream.

I think it's funny that the thread starter's playing the e-thug card and all this and all that, and claims he's building his 240 for the 1320.

If it's being built for the 1320, why is he worrying about lighting and Silvia front ends and stuff? That $1000+ could easily be put into building a badass SR or KA and be well on its way to 600+ rwhp.

But nope, Silvia front conversion comes first guys.
