Talking Track day shot at Laguna Seca

I went up to Laguna Seca with a friend who finally got his project S13 finished. His was a 2 year ordeal, kind of like my S14. Amazing track, they will be having another in Jan. It was about $300 per car to get a days driving in. Can't wait to take my car there in Jan. The corkscrew is one of the greatest parts of the trac k. His car overpowered S2000's and Miatas with ease. Even and RX8. All he has is some coil overs, and the SR. We ran my old Rota 7.5's x 17's and it was a blast. He has some R32 wheels but didn't have much tread on those tires. He wants to stay with the 16's i think. Sweet photo taken by <gotbluemilk.com> I am driving in this shot, this is turn #5 as we start to head up hill. We beat the dog$hit out of this car yesterday and it just came back barking every time.
If anyone has an interest for the January track day, it will be thru Leadfoot Adventures. A great group of mature track junkies.

They had it spread out by skill level. There were 5 groups of cars. Here are a couple more pics. The yellow Vette was following a Porsche too closely when the Porsche blew up and spewed oil on the track. He drove that Vette to the track. I think the Porsche guy did also. NOT the Porsche pictured btw.

You can view some track videos here.
http://www.laguna-seca.com/multimedia/

Or just fire up the closest PS2 and select LAGUNA SECA on Gran Tourismo 4 to get a better idea.

It is a good 7 to 8 hour drive from S.D. depending on when you leave.
Sure, you can destroy your car there. The Vette above hit the tire wall, and on thru to the concrete. Lots of sand traps to prevent that though.

The Carrera GT was by far the sickest car out there. And at a quarter million dollar price tag, he was either a multi multi millionaire or a fool. It sounds like a jet engine. Then there was "Kippy" in the brand new 4 door convertible M3 that couldn't even overtake our car. And that dude payed like $1,200 just so he could drive in all the classes just to get more track time. Some characters out there, but all in all had a great time.

Fire suits a must or optional? I have not seen anyone call them a must have back this way yet and hope its not something that folks start going to. I'm all for being safe but I don't care to wear a suit all summer either.

No, firesuits are optional of course. I am married now and we are trying to have our first child right now, so i have had to outfit my car with serious protection. Then again, i am more serious about track as my skills and knowledge improve. It can take a few minutes for anyone to reach you if you roll your car, so for me and for the racers we sponsor, a suit and extinguisher in the car is mandatory.

It was more like 14 hours total driving. It sucked.
But it was worth it.
There are track days all the time, just visit the track websites to check their schedules, and which clubs are booked. There is a Time Attack at Button Willow next weekend.

I went to visit a friend of mine who is at the DOD Linguistics school up in Monterey, and as we're driving in we passed Laguna Seca. Too bad it was like midnight then =( It took us about 6 hours to get there from Oceanside.

What was required for your car to compete?

Nothing much really. Just a fast car. Good suspension. An SA 2000 or above rated helmet. Then just take it from there.

How late can you get in? I know a lot of places are pretty cool if you have an issue and call them as soon as possible they will let you reset your track day for a future event and at the very least give you a good chunk off on the next one. I know I had an issue where I went to pick up my car after getting some suspension work done only to find the car was not finished and called BeaveRun the morning of the event and was given full credit for the next event. Maybe you can do the same?

As for those who have not done this, DO IT ASAP!!! There is nothing quite like going full tilt boogie and really pushing your car to its utter limits. You WILL find every limitation your car has and know where you actually need to make upgrades. Its a great place to meet other folks who are just as nuts about cars as you are and find out first hand what works and what does not.

In short its the goods. I was hooked after my first track day and now I can't wait to get my new car built up to the point where I feel that its safe enough to take out and push. They do tech the cars but many places are pretty easy to deal with. As long as the car is safe, they don't care if its fast. Either should you because the weakest link the first few times out is almost always the part behind the wheel. Lord knows thats the case for me.

By the way... Good to see you guys are gung ho about safety. I'm not sure if its a good idea or not but I'm honestly considering a fire system in my new car. Its not something you see in many cars but they are not all that expensive when you consider how much they can do if the worse happens. Hey, it may be a bad idea for all I know (like full cages in street cars) but its something that I plan on looking into.

Shiet, us norcal guys need to figure out how to find out more of this track events around as. Driftings pretty much dead up here, time to start hitting up grip driving events like these. Most of us know about laguna seca, thunderhill and infineon, just a matter of finding out whos throwing an event and when.

yeah I've been on Laguna aka Goony with my Civic. I ran 2:01 laps before I slid sideways doing 60 after turn 9 on my third session. Flatspots from that and then I was like almost done for the day. I didn't finish or do my last session as I was pretty worn out. It's def. worth the money. I wish that I would have ran the civic before I sold it as I had a bunch of upgrades done to it. I was shooting for a 1:57 w/ a sohc.

Oh but the fun part as well was riding in my instructors car - Viper GTS- 450hp...1:37 lap times

theres infamous club groups and event promoters for all the tracks.... just look at the schedule.... you could even join NASA... i was a part of scca for awhile...
and just declined.. my re activation for membership...
theres thunderhill, altamont, laguna seca, infineon.. plenty of roadracing tracks... i bet we could rock a small road race session at altamont... the problem is having someone knowledgeable to run it and tech it...
