i got a 1990 240 hatchback and i was wondering what kinds/years sr20det engines would fit into my car with the least amount of work and money...or if there are trade offs between work and money, let me know.  i got 222,000 miles on my stock motor and its about ready for a change...also...what about the legality and emission? (i live in georgia if it makes a difference)

S13 SR20DET's fit correctly in all S13's.
S13's w/ SR20DET:  '91(?)-'97
'91-'94:  SR20DET Redtop
'95-'97:  SR20DET Blacktop
both are said to be the same, output-wise.  however, the SR20DET blacktop is said to be harder to connect the AC with than the SR20DET redtop.

fitting in the S14 SR20DET or the S15 SR20DET into an S13 will cost considerably much more, but the the stock engines put out more hp than the stock S13 SR20DET, by like 20hp-50hp, iirc.

also, if ur worried about the legality of the engine swap, then this isn't for u.  Swapping these JDM engines is illegal, regardless of whur u live in the US.  emissions, just slip the tester a few bills and u've passed.

lastly, if and when the time comes for installation, if u pay half-ass, they will work half-ass!  look for the most reasonable price from someone that has expierience doing this and knows what they are doing.  YOU are going to end up driving what THEY do to your car.

hope this answers ur q's.  if any of this info is wrong, pls feel free to correct me.

my best friends dad works at a nissan car shop.  thanks for the info.  whats the worst that can happen if youre caught with a sr swap?  who looks out for that..i mean who do you have to worry about?  is it really that big of an issue?  so with a sr swap i will not pass emission?  there isnt any visual inspection where i live.  thanks again

actually if you research the heavythrottle.com site, you'll find out that in your s13, u can fit the s13 redtop, s13 blacktop, and the s14 sr20det no problem... the only one that will need modification is the s15 sr20det.
goto www.heavythrottle.com and goto the sr20det faq section, you'll find more than enough info. u can also e-mail them from that site too.
