Parts to salvage off of KA?

So next week is the big week for me, I reserved an SR from Enjuku and will be going to pick it up next Friday(assuming it's ready). That day I'm going to drop it off at a local mechanic to have him rip the KA out, put a new clutch in the SR, and mount the SR in the engine bay. I want to do all of the work after that as it's high time I do my first install. I would do the motor swap myself, but apartment complexes don't like to see engines sitting in their parking lot

My question to you all is, what parts should I get the mechanic to keep off of the KA and what should I do beforehand to make this process easier on myself?

I've been doing quite a bit of reading and searching (keyword!) and off the top of my head I know that I should get him to keep the speedo sensor, oil pressure sensor, O2 sensor, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something. It would be nice to have a list of parts from you veterans

In the "make my install easier" department, I was going to put the heater hoses on before he installs the motor and tell him to leave them as is. I hear it's a royal PITA/impossible to get them on once the motor is in.

Valve cover and cams.

Well it's a KA24E, I don't know that they will be of any benefit. Definately not the valve cover and I don't know about one cam, lol.

Doubtful, I think he's just going to dispose of it. I was thinking of selling it but I really don't have anywhere to keep it until then. Unless someone expressed interest in picking it up as soon as the swaps done so I don't have to store it, but that would be impeccable timing.


As a sidenote, if anyone WAS interested, it does run good but it has over 200k miles on it.

err if its running u can get 150-200 for a ka-e depending on the milage.

But yes, anyone name anything I should salvage other than oil pressure, o2, and speedo sensors plus any time savers?

But I'm sure someone would be interested in buying it if it runs. Even if you sell it for really cheap, you'll still make some money, which is better than just disposing of it.

keep as much misc stuff as you can if you're just going to junk the ka anyway

I don't quite see what's wrong with that? I don't trust him to do the entire install, correct. I assume he knows how to at least mount a motor. If I wanted someone to completely install it, I'd pay the extra money to have Enjuku do it but then I wouldn't learn anything. Money isn't the issue here, it's a learning experience for me.

Yeah, I live in an apartment complex so I don't have a place to do the motor pull really since they're kinda anal about that stuff so I'm just going to have him pull the KA-E and mount the SR. Then I'll tow it home and do the rest of the work over the next month or two myself. If I had a place to store the SR and do the motor swap myself I would.

if you don't sell the engine as a whole, you might as well keep the common repair parts to sell like the starter, alternator, etc. maybe plugs and wires if they are relatively new.

Isnt there shops out there that do specails like in cali? I remember seeing stuff like $2800 installed prices on SR's in the vendor sections before

For an entire install? We don't get those kind of deals here like Cali, at least not that I've ever heard. Cheapest I know of is XAT at $4300 and well.. haven't heard very good things. But that feedback is relative I'm sure.

Like I said, I'm not concerned with the cost as long as it doesn't skyrocket and I won't let it do that.

IMO i'd go rent out a storage unit at your local storage joint.

Park car in there.

Go to Harbor Freight.

Grab anything and everything.

Get your credit card out...don't look just swipe and sign.

Go look up a guide online on the swap.

Make sure the storage place is close to a NAPA/Autozone/whatever.

Have fun.

BTW start looking for a DOHC gauge cluster/power steering lines/etc. cause you'll need it.

I thought about getting a storage unit, but in Gainesville all of the students rent them out so either a.) the rates are rediculous or b.) good luck finding one.

It's still a possibility though, I may look around tomorrow when the places are open. I'm just a little worried about screwing something up taking the KA out or putting the SR in.

Also, I need to replace the clutch, which I've never done and I'm a little worried to do myself.

clutch is easy. I was a little worried, too, but it is very easy. Pull off starter, then tranny, then pressure plate and clutch. Check flywheel, resurface if necessary, install new clutch/pressure plate, tighten screws evenly, then torque to spec (was 30ft/lbs for my RB), put in TOB, reinstall starter and tranny. It'll take you like 5 minutes.

You guys are tempting me. I'll look into it tomorrow. Seems as though the storage unit place across the street from my complex charges 102.59$ for an automobile storage unit for a month. Doesn't seem as bad as I thought, maybe because I'm far enough away from UF. It really shouldn't take me a month to do... Maybe two weekends. Guess I should start looking for a clutch swap guide, although it's sounding like it's pretty foolproof.

I was really just worried about breaking something putting the engine into the car and switching the clutch. I should stop being a bitch This is my first swap though, so I guess it's partially justified.


Also, I'll be making a wiki-esque guide of my trials and tribulations of the swap. Another how-to to add to the stack of the others out there. I don't know if it will help anyone, but hopefully it'll do something positive.

IMO i'd get someone local to come help you and kinda...be your guide.

Luckily for me, when I did my first motorswap, I did it with a really wise guy named Robert...we rebuilt a 76 Camaro. From auto i6 to 4spd zz383 beast. Only cost like $8k and it's BALLIN now.
