My question is do the vents have to redirect a certain way to get AC to work. My HVAC unit works okay except it wont turn on the AC no matter what i do. I kind of jumped the compressor clutch by manually wiring voltage to it, but it's not cold. My compressor very well may have no charge, but I'm wondering of there's something else i should look at.

check to see if the idle jumps up when you turn it on. If they do, then the compressor is working. If you still dont get a cold air, buy a kit at an auto parts store to recharge it. It will cost like $20 to do it rather than $100+ from someone else

Um, no offense but did you read my post? No the compressor wasn't turning on, but i jumped it on directly.

The question is whether the vents shift when you turn on AC, and could that explain why it wont blow cold?

im not sure what you mean by shifting. do you mean like you need to select feet/face/both/feet&def/defroster

either way, if the compressor is on it should be comming out cold somewhere, if not you need refrigerant

hope that helps

I heard a tech at work talking about the vent door not switching and that is why it wasn't blowing cold air. So Nissan might have done something like Ford?

I don't think that you will find a R-12 recharge kit, I am thinking that you are thinking of a 134A, and the older 240s don't have that.
I looked at the ac diagrams and I think that the cooling fins,or condensor, is in the airflow already.
I am going to have to replace my compressor, expansion valve, and dryer this week, I will look in there and see.

Thanks broadway. My car was made in november of 92 so I'm not sure if it's R12 or R134a. Any easy way to find out?

easiest way would be to look at the valves. i don't know the difference myself, but the R134 valve is a different size than the R12 valve. you are "supposed" to replace them when converting. i think some shops have conversion valves that bypass this safety measure. either way, you could probably buy a can of R134 and see if it matches up to your fittings. if it doesn't you have R12.

sorry if that was a lame way to answer that problem.

you may be able to look at the sight glass and see if you have any refrigerant left...or if it has bubbles or something. do you have an FSM? i've never done any serious work with an A/C system...and now i don't have one anymore.
