Well people the topic title says it all. There has to be more Cost effective ways to get to the magic 250-350 Hp mark that everyone is trying to reach. The S12 came with a single cam head CA1.8ET with a T25 I believe. Yeah, I'm gonna have to vote "no" on the CA18ET. As a middle of the road engine on the S12 it was nice, but these days it's just another 20 year old four banger. It's an 8 valve SOHC, 6500rpm redline, tiny little turbo, weak exhaust manifold... It's going to take a lot of work to see 200hp much less 250-350.
The FJ is nice, but it is also old, rare, heavy, and not cheap to build. For that kind of streetable power in a 240SX, you just can't beat the SR20DET, KA24(D)E+T, and CA18DET. Now, if you want a LOT of power, that's when other options become attractive. RB-series engines or an American V8 perhaps. |

I usually only see 240s, with SRs, CAs, RBs, and VGs, but there are endless possibilities. KAs, SRs, and CAs are the easiest. RB is hard but getting more common (slowly but surely), and VGs, I have only seen one.
If I were to ever do a swap other than the Basic 3, Id get a 240Z and put like an RB in there, or start researching more on domestics, and become a torque-whore <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'> . For whoever posted the thread, it all depends on how much time and money you have. Getting an engine isn't much of a problem, but putting one in, especially something rare, requires lots of time, money, backup money, parts money, another car, knowledge about the engine you're getting, and did I forget money. The problem is you said cost effective. A cost effective swap, would be CA or KA. CA seems like it would be the cheapest way to get turbo. KA would be cheapest swap, but easiest/cheapest way to get 250 from a KA is turbo. Not to sure about the CA, and how hard it is to get to 250HP. An SR, shouldn't be too hard, a new turbo and a few other essentials, and fmic can get you around that area. Or if you are a high booster you can do it on the stock engine, but better to be safe than sorry. If you get an RB20 then you'll be at 250 (I think, not sure on the hp of the RB20, only the RB26). Anyway, since you're looking for a cost effective swap, I wouldn't try to experiment things, with other engines, and stay with the regulars.

Cheapest engine... CA... SR would probably be the easiest way to get to that much power, but KA-T is very close if not easier.... I guess it just depends on the mileage of your current KA or if you can somehow aquire a free KA with low miles

So If I could get a CA block, just a usdm one, There is no way to convert to DOHC? You could put in some performance internals and balance and blueprint whats left. ![]() Forget the ca18et, it really sucks and would never get you 300 HP. Forget the FJ it is old/hard to find and would cost you too much money. Your real choices would be sr20det, ca18det or a turbo kit for the KA or a far out there V8 swap or vg30et (old 300zx engine) swap. Thats if your on anything resembling a budget. |

I like the ca18et idea, because they made little power only do to a restrictive head and small turbo. The DOHC head doesn't seem to be an easy solution, but just port the stock head and get a bigger turbo. In fact, poor flow isn't really a problem on building turbo cars because you could run more boost to make up for it (the poor flow improves low end to spool up the turbo and it works out). I believe it's crank is forged like other nissan cranks of the time. Don't know about pistons, but if its a junk yard motor, it might not be a bad idea to rebuild it with stronger pistons anyway.b
