The dropping resistor has nothing to do with a manual car, it maintains line pressure in the automatic. You don't need it.
You figured the starter out, but basically the manual harness has a clutch interlock relay, while the auto uses a park inhibit switch, it's found in the auto's harness while the interlock is inside the main fusebox.
