Hello all,
I've already done a search, and couldn't find very much on my particular problem. I have a '96 5sp with about 77k miles on it. For the past few weeks, my idle had been kinda squirrly. It would be at a nice 800 or so, and then dip to 4-500, like I've read many of them do. Today, as I started accelerating from a stop at a light, my car gave a little shake, as if I had let the clutch out a little too fast. I looked down, and the check engine light was on. Everything felt and sounded normal as I drove around, though. At the next light, however, I noticed that my idle was now at a steady 1400 rpms. It stayed this way at every light from then on. Any suggestions? Could a simple tuneup be the answer, or does the check engine light mean something a little more ominous? Thanks in advance! - Marty |

Check if the ECU throws codes. That will determin whether a sensor (O2) went out. If not reset the ECU and see if the CEL goes off. If it does adjust idle through Idle air control valve.

Yea, try adjusting your timing. If that doesnt seem to make a difference, it might be a vacuum leak.

Hmmmm, could a bad valve cover gasket be the culprit? Mine is kinda messed up from when I polished the valve cover. Only thing is, that was a long time ago, and this idle problem hasn't been around nearly as long. I've been meaning to replace it. Is that silicone gasket maker stuff worth a damn?

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon about the idle staying high. It's all over the place now. I just checked the ecu, and it threw a code 25 - Idle control valve circuit open or shorted. Any suggestions? Thanks.
