Alright, last night I left to go out somewhere. I let the engine warm up for about a minute because it was rather cold and I hadn't driven in about 3 days. So I back out and shift to first fine and then I shifted to second at about 3000rpm, when I shifted to second there was a slight vibration like a slight grinding. That's the only time it did it all night though. Does this mean that my 2nd gear syncro is in need of replacing? If it does need replacing, then why did it only do it the first time I shifted to second?

My car does the same thing when I first drive after it has been sitting for a little while. Just like you mentioned, after the first time, it stops.

I think the tranny fluid just needs to warm up, atleast that's my theory. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It could be that just the second gear synchro wasn't getting fluid or whatever because of it's position, but that is just a guess. I would change the fluid and look for excess (some is okay) shavings on the magnetic plug.

It started with my thrid gear, and now my second. I can't even downshift to 3rd or 2nd, and not upshifting is getting tough. Some times it goes in, sometimes I get rejected and the shifter shoots back to neutral

I am just going to drive it till it dies, then get a "new one" from a junker.

Doesn't sound bad, but do not make the mistake the last owner and I did by ignoring it.

Your little grind actually doesn't sound bad at all.

To give an example, my second gear grinds slightly every time I upshift (even slowly) into it, and grinds badly when I miss my downshifts... i.e. don't put it all the way into the gate before letting the clutch out. But the downshift is my fault.

I wouldn't worry about it so much. If you're really paranoid, try changing the tranny fluid to some quality redline (or other) stuff, but beyond that, you'd only be able to get a tranny rebuild, or a new tranny... expect that to run you at least $400 to $500, and up.

Alright, I think I just need to change the fluid. I called my mechanic in Indy today and he said that was probably the situation. I'll just put that redline stuff in it. How hard is it to change the tranny fluid? Would I be able to change it myself? Or should I take it to a shop?

Yes, as long as you have a jack, 4 jackstands and a turkey baster, you can do it. Jack up car, unscrew BOTH filler and drain plugs on tranny (if you drain the tranny then find out you can't break the filler bolt, you're fucked! ), drain fluid, put cap back on, use turkey baster (or ideally a hand pump) to fill tranny with new fluid.
That should be about it!

If you drain the tranny and can't break the filler plug you can just fill it through the shifter hole.

If you're going to do it, you might as well order 2 extra quarts and do the diff as well. Same fluid, same procedure, extra 30 minutes.
