so I tried sitting in my friend's S14 (auto), I had the seat all the way back...my head clearance is okay but the problem here is that my legs are really long and it kinda hits the steering wheel...I'm afraid that this will affect my driving or my shifting (getting a 5spd) is there anyway to help the situation???
I was thinking about getting aftermarket seats, is there anyway make the seats go farther back, I was thinking about getting the SPARCO sprint... I just need a way to free up space to work the pedals when I have to....PLEASE HELP...

i am 6'3"-6'4" And i just fit in my s14, just have to get the seating position right. And most aftermarket seats will make you sit higher. There might be a few out there that will work tho.

avoid aftermarket seats, stock is as low as you can get.

Actually you can get aftermarket seats to sit you lower than stock IF you don't use a sliding bracket and mount them directly to the floor. I rode in one s14 with Sparco EVOs bolted directly to the floor, even with my helmet on I had a good 3 inches of head room with the sunroof. The draw back there is that you don't have any adjustibility so you better pick a seating position that works for track and street or make a compromise . Short of that you wold need to find a s14 without a sun roof.

Can't you just adjust the steering wheel higher? the steering wheel is in the center and the clutch and gas pedal on the side so this shouldn't affect your shifting. My leg hit the steering wheel when i press the brake, but that's because I set my steering wheel down.

I'm 6'3" and drive a 98 240. You just have to put the seat all the way back, and tilt it pretty far back too. If it feels weird, you will get used to driving like that and won't even think of it aafter a week or so. You should be able to tilt the steering wheel up, and if its already tilted up then you must be some sort of ill-porpotioned alien.

...notes that Matt neglects to mention that he is 5'8"...

Being 6'4", I HATE squeezing into the 240 sometimes. One thing to consider is that there are two ways to be tall - long legs or long torso. The problem is that they are connected and at some point, something's got to give. You can only go back so far before you run into the slope of the roof.

uu's on target w/ his suggestions though - 1) no sunroof; 2) bolt to the floor. I've tried everything else, including taking the seat apart and removing most of the foam. I still don't fit.

What about a smaller aftermarket steering wheel? It will make turning the wheel heavier but it should help right?

here's what to do:

buy s14 w/o a sunroof/moonroof/whatever

steering wheels: buy a hub and use a spacer (50 mmis good) so that you can pull the wheel closer to you at the same time keeping your seat back for your leg room to pedals

seats: buy japanese seat rails (bride, blitz, jic, nismo, etc) w/ the bottom mount reclinable seat (same above brands or different) or SIDE mount rails (bucket seat)

you'll be fine.

edit: DONT BUY A SPARCO SPRINT. The railswill sit you TOO HIGH and you'll hit your head, i know, i am 5'10 and had a spring, was cutting it pretty close, witha helmet, id' hit for sure

I'd stick to US or Euro seat manufacturers. Odds are, if you are that tall, Japanese seats won't fit you very well. Having sat in a Bride seat, I can say that was one of the most uncomfortable seats I've ever been in b/c it was made for people that are 6" shorter and 40 pounds lighter. I also imagine cost and certification (if that matters to you) would be issues. The Sparco Evo 2's are nice.

I'm curious about the side mount rails though - I haven't heard too many stories about them working successfully for tall people, maybe b/c there's only about 1" to be lost under the seat anyway?

*edit* and yes, I did fit into Joe's car just fine, although there is no way I could make broom height. **

hipposleek:

i'm talking about RAILS not SEATS!!!!
many seats can use differnt company rails. example:
you might have asparco spring that sits high w/ the sparco rails, but that SAME seat on bride rails is a whole nother world!
rails and seats are TOTALLY different, how they work together is what is important decision making!

bride does make seats for the larger indivual. i dont care nor know which brand though

bucket seats are lower becaues you are in a "bucket" so your butt is lower down in the seat, closer to the floor as well. bottom mount have FLAT bottom, where bucket..is likea bucket, and you are back down and lower in general. which makes it harder to get in and out of but more set in the saet when driving, so as a daily driver, buckets can be a nuisances (i used to hvae one-hated it) but on the track..ahh, no regrets there!

yes evo2s are EXCELLENT seats for the larger (vertical and horizontal) individual.

also you can use a Sparco Rev seat w/ bride side mount rails. sits VERY WELL. i almsot bought a rev because of this, but need a reclinable/sports seat (i'm getting a recaro or jic in jan and a brix in august!

Gotcha - in reading the quoted part of your post, you talk about rails and then the "bottom mount reclinable seat (same above brands or different)" - which I took to mean the seat should be the same brand as the rails.

Just thought I'd share my experiences:
I'm 6'3", and I drive a S14 with a sunroof. With the stock seats, I had plenty of head room, but my legs were kind of cramped (I'm on of those guys with really long legs). Then I swapped in a pair of Corbeau GT7s.
With the Corbeaus, I can't slide the seat all the way back or my legs won't reach the pedals (woohoo&#33. Granted, the front seat does touch the backseat, but I was going to take it out anyway. My head does hit the roof now. If I tilt the seat back, I'm okay (we're talking .5" of room). But no helmets for me.
I've been toying with the idea of getting Bride rails, but I'm just not sure how much they will help. The thing is, my Corbeau rails mount the seat lower than the stock seat, BUT the GT7 is 2-3 times thicker than the stock one, so I sit much higher.
One thing about aftermarket seats, they're with you forever, and I say get as nice a set as you can afford. I've had mine for 4 years, and they've been in 3 different cars: a '67 camaro, a '86 VW GTI, and now my S14.
They're starting to look a little worn, so if I get them recovered, I might get some of the bottom foam cut to lower me an inch or so.
I don't know if all this rambling helps, but I thought I'd share anyways.

tip to you: dont bring up old threads and get a hardtop s14 = more head room
