S13 or S14?  On the S14 you have to take off the inside door panel...I'm assuming it works the same for the S13.

Yup its the same for the S13.  Door panel is pretty straight forward to take off.  If the new speakers are bigger than stock what you need to do is cut a new piece of thin plywood to match the pattern of the hole in the door and redrill holes for the new piece, put a little bit of silocone between the metal and the wood for a good seal and voila!  This is not too detailed but do a search cause there were a couple of posts about this a few weeks ago.  Also remember to put speaker hats on the spaekers so they dont get soaked from the window gap.   I had a blown 6.5" from this, really sucked.  If you cant find a speaker hat just cut a plastic bag to fit, thats what i did and it works fine.

I assume from  your other post that you  have a '93 s13. What I write is assuming you are replacing with stock-sized 4x6 speakers:

1) Remove the door panels:
-Open the door, pop open the cover towards the upper front of the panel with a flat headed screwdriver, use a philips to remove this screw.
-Remove the door latch and lock backing by pulling the the back inwards and "roll" it out.
-Remove the handle and window controls by popping up the screw cover in the bottom of the handle with a flat blade and pulling out the phillips head screw. Fenagle the whole deal out and disconnect it.
-(On the passenger side only) Remove the screw from the "oh shit" handle with a large phillips and twist it towards the car, lift up and out.
-For the last part, you can either grip the bottom of the panel and simply pull out swinging it up and away, or use a panel tool and pop out each of the snaps around the door.

2) Remove the old speaker:
-Unscrew the four screws around the speaker, pull it out.
-Unplug the speaker from it's wiring harness and the amp.

3) Install the new speaker:
-If you have an aftermarket reciever in your dash with any significant power output, your best bet is to bypass the amp in the door entirely by removing the amps wiring harness (the amp is the circuit board behind the speaker, you can pull out the entire amp and speaker unit by unscrewing four screws around the black plastic the speaker is mounted to). Use a multimeter to find out which are the positive and negative feeds from the deck, or simply run new wire from the deck to the speakers.
-If you have a wiring harness for the 240sx speakers, and are keeping the weak amps in the doors, plug it in and roll. If you have no harness, guage which wire is positive and negative and connect to speaker blades accordingly. If you are bypassing the amps, guage positive and negative, and connect up.
-Screw the new speaker back in.

4) Put everything back together, if you took it apart, you should be able to put it back.

That's all, hope it helped, and good luck.

There are no cliff notes.

My best recollection of the stock amp is it's a 5 watt. If you have a higher powered deck, you definitely want to bypass it. I noticed a tremendous improvement after I disabled the rear amp in my '92 through some infinity 4x6 plate speakers. I disabled them off the bat when I installed my Kappa components up front. Still want a good amp for the front speakers, they're being crippled even by the 22 watts from my Kenwood deck :-(

If you're planning to run new wires, or hook up an external amp, be prepared to drill holes in your doors.

Not true, it just takes alot of time and even more patience. &nbsp; It took me about 30 mins to install new wires into the driver door and about three hours to install them into the passenger door (needed to take out the glove box to get to it, also included about 4 breaks to drink beers and swear at my car). &nbsp; All are run through the stock gromets using a coat hanger. &nbsp; It is very doable if you are able to put up with the time and the bloody knuckles from the installation.

A speaker hat goes around the back of the speaker so it won't get wet(water in the doors). Crutchfield carries a bunch of them at http://www.crutchfield.com/.

They are kind of like jimmy hats, except for your speakers. &nbsp; So I guess they really should be called speaker condoms, wouldn't that be a hoot?

They were called "waterproof foam baffles" when I bought them. Unless you have other plans on keeping water off the speakers, you will probably want them. Small price to pay.

in terms of getting rid of the factory amp and running wires to your door...you actually dont have to...just run the new wires from the wires behind the head unit then to your amp, hell of alot easier then fucking with the gomments, haha on my old 240 i just ran the wires on the out of the gomment, and that also worked fine and wasnt as much of a pain in the ass, but didnt look as nice, i would go the first route i mentioned, unless u have alot of time and willing to have the frustration....

maybe if you didnt drink 4 beers your knucles wouldnt be bloody?

im not sure if my amps were bypassed or not. BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN I HAD AN AMP....

i had best buy instal my amp cuz when you buy it there, instalation is free! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> &nbsp;so why not?
i dont think they bypassed my stock amps but my clarion 60x4 amp pushed my boston 4x6 door speakers just fine and it was loud as FOK! and there are amps in the back?! where?! i stripped out my rear interior to go street racing in philly once, and all i could see was the HICAS control unit. wierd. so if i took out these um, "amps" and wired them up in my ae86, that should push my polks a litle harder, yeah? i think my factory ae86 stereo is like 3 watts per channel hahahaa even polks sound like doo-doo with that much power. i just dont want to buy an aftermarket radio for my cars now since all my stuff got jacked out of my s13. i hate thieves. anyone got an s13 radio for sale? on to WTB board...

chris
