Questions from a new guy.

This is post #1 for me, so I apologize in advance for this question as it has probably been asked many times. I'm looking to go import to fufill my driving needs, going in straight lines is not driving. I've driven V8's for as long as I can remember, and I was thinking of buying this 91 240SX and dropping an SR20DET Black Top in it. I'm sure you all have swapped the sr20, so I was wondering if everything was fine with the engine when it was finally in the car. How was the turbo, clutch, just those sorts of things. Should I look to get any certain parts to have the shop put on at the same time to help gain power? I havent got much money, but I want a better, faster car than my current ratty 87 Camaro, and all I see are Hondas and I refuse to buy one. Anything you all can help with would be great.

Yea. We don't ALL have sr20det motors. That is misinformation propigated by the magazines.
There is another route that some people choose to take. Turboing the engine that is already in the car. It makes for more displacement, and more torque. Seeing as you have driven V-8s, it would seem that this is the logical choice. But it's your call... I'm not knocking either one.

The SR20det motor will have the same inherent problems as any used performance engine. And for power... do a search for performance sr. It will take all your money, and then some.

i think you can answer every one of your questions by reading the thousands of posts here. you are asking very general questions, so use the search function to find specifics, if you don't find it... don't be afraid to ask.

if you don't have much money then an SR swap probably isn't in the card for ys real soon. but ya the 240 is a fun car, you will like it!

Thanks for the kind welcoming. I didn't mean to say that you ALL had the swap, more like the southern "yall" made into to two words. I tried to mean that I figured that some of you have to have the swap. Dont get me started, its this area of Indiana, we make no sense.

This car has 150K+ miles, and I've heard time and time again that stock 240 engines are junk, which kind of goes against this car making it to the 150K mark, but I digress.

About the swap and the inhearent problems, I always thought that the shop tears down the motor and puts it back together after they've cleaned everything up so to speak.

Thanks for telling me about the other way to go as well, but what is the better decision ka or sr? I'll have enough to do the swap after I buy it, but then ill be broke. I just dont want to have to fix anything really quick.

Who has told you this? Nissan makes some of the most bullet-proof engines around. The KA (cast-iron w/ aluminum head) is a very strong engine and can go past 150k w/ no problem if properly maintained.

It's all a personal preference. There are many posts here debating SR vs KA-T and none of those posts actually come to a conclusion as to which one is the better of the two. They both have their advantages, and they both have their disadvantages. It's just a matter of which route YOU want to go.

BTW--welcome to the board!! You will find mounds of info here, and have lots of fun in the meantime!

Ive been looking, which I see now have made my questions obsolete. I did find out about the search option which I had no idea about beforehand. About the 150k mile car, its great that its bulletproof. Ive always like nissans and I know they make great products, but im more worried about tuning a car with that much wear on it. Not everyone takes care of their cars. Like I said, Ive only driven V8s, and Id have to more or less rebuild the engine to do anything major if one had 150k mi on it. I figured that id just buy this car and get the s14 sr20 for less miles and power. but Im mixed up in a way. I know a lot about cars in general, but specifics of this sort on imports is where I hit a wall.

Hey welcome to the board. It's always good to see another person from Indiana on here. You might want to just drive the car for a few months stock to see what you want to do with it. You really shouldn't plan modifications to a car that you don't have and have never driven. As for tuning a high mileage engine...it is a risk that you just have to take if you're really set on modding. If you do get a 240, I'd take it to a trusted mechanic and have them check everything.

This thread Here is a poll, kinda, on how much people have spent on their sr20det swaps. I think the running average is about $6000, for I don't know exactly how much horsepower. I am at about $8500 for a forged KA rebuild with turbo kit. Just add boost controller, and I should be good to 350hp or so.
Those numbers are just to show how much money a swap will cost. A $3k swap is a cheap swap.
I really am trying to walk on eggshells to post here, cuz this is a touchy subject... but I personally think that if you want torque, get a turbo/rebuild. If you want to rev and have a smooth powerband, get the swap.
