for the SR experienced
after intensely researching, here are the questions that I have come up with concerning the SR swap:
1. If an s13 redtop were dropped into the s14 chassis, would the battery have to be relocated in order to upgrade to a FMIC? how about the s14 engine? 2. Correct me if I am wrong, but if I have read the posts right, then people currently have s14s with redtop engines running with A/C. How much trouble was this for you? I am also wondering if anyone is running A/C in the s14 motor in an s14 chassis. 3. I have had nothing but conflicting opinions on this next question: people say that installing the s14 motor in an s14 chassis is easier than installing a redtop, while others do not. Is there anyone out there that has done BOTH, and can clarify this question for me? thanks guys, any help is appreciated. |

When you swap the SR in either car and want to upgrade to FMIC, you will have to relocate the battery or:
This is what I did. Have custom piping made for the TR side. If you have ever seen a car with an fmax kit, they use the same thing. The Cold pipe of the TB comes down, under the chassis, and around to the intercooler. I relocated my battery on my first swap and it sucks. The damn battery sits in your trunk, and you have to do more sawzall work to cut out the battery tray to put piping through there. Plus, you can keep your stock battery, so buying an optima isn't a necessity. Its better IMHO to have that side made. 2. There are not many running AC on s14s with s13 motors. It is possible though with custom lines. 3. Swapping a s14 or a s13 into a s14 body is equal work. I have heard that the s14 is easier to swap into a s13 body than a s13 motor, but I don't understand why. If you want to chat further with me my MSN is [email protected]

in answer to your first question no. you can get a slimmer battery that will fit up front in the stock location and clear your FMIC piping . Its what they do in Japan its what we do here on our swaps.
As far as AC goes AC is a crap shoot. You can make the AC work on any of the engine installs its just a question of which compressor you use. I.e. a redtop bracket with your KA compressor . With a S13 engine you should be able to hook up your AC lines with the above mentioned setup . With a S14 engine the T28 is a larger Turbo and you to have to modify your AC lines. Putting the S13 engine into a S14 is a little more work than putting in a S14 engine. Though S14 engines tend to cost more. Installing a S14 engine in a S13 is more wire work. Ok that said , yes I am putting in a S14 SR in my 92 Fastback for a number of reasons. What are these reasons you ask? Extremely low mileage on the clip due to the fact its a Kouki S14 clip. a broader flatter torque band than the S13 Redtop or Blacktop. I am looking for a engine that has pull early and low as well as mid and top. The S14 SR has this due to V V T. You can also get very close to the HP figures I desire with bolts and not sacrificing your bottom end. I like S13 SR 's but they are much more mid range and top engines. Yes the clips cost more. Though I think the trade off is worth it. More and more people I know here in socal are starting to go down this road. I am gonna be the second such conversion I know of personally. I also know of another member of this forum who lives here in socal who is planning on doing this as well. Food for thought.
