Question lsd, need help

I have a 92 240sx coupe se. I put the bad boy on a lift and i wanted to see if i had an lsd. i looked at the diff. and looked for and orange sticker but i didnt know where i was looking and it was just a quick glance and i didnt notice one. so anyway i spun one of the tires to see what happens and what happined kinda shocked me cause all the reading ive been trying to do to find out if i have lsd or and open diff. didnt help me because when i spun the right rear the left rear didnt even move at all. it just stayed there. so then i spun the left rear and the right didnt spin.......im just lost....if anyone can tell me what thats about, that would be great.....

thats interesting. maybe your diff is blown. drain the fluid and see if there are chunks in it. or it could be an axle.

you have a open differential my friend . No VLSD in your car sorry. Now you have to buy one.

heh... should've looked to see your driveshaft spinning. although, normally wouldn't the other tire spin the opposite way? seems odd that the driveshaft and all the tranny gears would rather spin instead of the other tire.... maybe he's got some seized rear calipers?

if your driveshaft was spinning while your other tire wasn't, your diff is still working.

how whould i know if i have seized calipers.....

i spun both tires together and they spun nice and smooth and it spun the drive shaft....so do i have an open diff. ? i thought an open diff. made the other tire turn the opposite way?

If you turned one tire and the other one turns the opposite way or not at all, you've got an open diff. The VLSD will need some force (breakaway force) to cause the tires to spin opposite ways, IIRC.

that's highly debateable.... probably between kaaz, cusco, nismo, etc.

Just because you have an open diff doesn't mean you can't burn out with 2 tires. If you do burn out with both tires it just means power is being evenly distributed across the diff.

No prob. I thought my friend had a VLSD when I did like 3 consecutive burnouts with his car and ended up with perfectly even rows of burnt rubber. He ended up confirming not having a VLSD after jacking the car up though....

yeah thats the only reason why i was so confused because i thought an open diff. just spins the right wheel. my friend has a '93 and he just leaves rubber on the right side.....weird stuff!!

Just to throw them out there, Tomei and ATS also make great LSDs. Definitely up there with Kaaz Cusco and Nismo.

One thing to take into account is how some differentials make the clicking noise. To some it may be music to their ears but for me Quiafe makes a lsd that uses gears and not clutches. Another difference is that Quiafe transfers more power to the tire with more traction as opposed to other LSD's that transfer power to both wheels evenly regardless. Man, i feel like a Quiafe sales representative.

P.S. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Do the Quaife ATB LSD's make noise(noticable noise from the interior of the car)?
