he was trying to line up the hood pins and adjusting where the pole of the hood pin would be placed.

I think he was just expressing his claustrophobia in a metaphorical manner. Like how a cat caught in an engine bay would be scared about getting caught in the blades.

Am I just playing devils advocate? I don't know.. lol
