I was just told the Apex-i n1 exhaust will make you lose a little low end but gain a lot of top end...is that correct?

yes it should do that. ur stock piping will actually give u more low-end than a cat-back exhaust b/c they're geared that way, but the top-end will definitely be improved.

retarding your timing a little would give more low end right?

yes, overall u'll have more power w/ a cat-back exhaust, u'll definitely notice it in higher rpm's. but sometimes having too big piping for an n/a won't exactly optimize ur performance, u'd be letting out 2 much air or exhaust. if u get an aftermarket intake like injen, u'll be taking in more air, then u'll need to get that air out efficiently, hence the cat-back exhausts. unfortunately most bolt-ons will take away some low-end, but the overall performance will be better, it's not like ur going to lose ALL of that low-end torque u like.

if u mean retarding ur timing by letting the valves stay open a bit longer, that wont help ur low end either, cuz thats for high end when u can let in more fuel. u'll prolly stutter at low end...
and the right headers shud get u better low end, if they cause the air to spin right
cuz the faster the exhaust comes out of ur muffler, the better the performance of ur car, so at low end, there is less exhaust, and the smaller opening makes it shoot out faster, but at high end it becoems constricting, although with the proper header, u can make that air spin and it should improve performance in both low and top ends
