facking timing chain cover...

I'm trying to pull out my lower timing chain cover on my ka24de and I can't! It's not even moving a little......

I pulled out the pulley and the 4 bolt on the top of to upper timing chain, 2 bolts on the oil pan and the rest of the bolt that the fsm is showing on the first page of the timing chain section. I've noticed a stange little head nut on the left.. but if it was only that ,It would move......(just a little screw on the top of the oil pan..)

I'm keeping the thermostat and the water pump on the front cover......

Any ideas ?

Ya gotta pull the oil pan off of the motor enough to get the pickup tube unbolted... and pry the shit out of it.

ok thanks! I'll remove that oil pan.

Do you know what is that little bolt on the left and the right of the lower timing chain cover... the bolt look so tiny... I have no clue what type of tool I need.

hahaha. I did the same thing. I was ready to hit the motor with a sledge hammer due to frustration of having EVERY bolt out, yet it wouldn't budge.

Depending on the year motor, as stated above, the oil pickup is connected to the front cover. Drop pan, remove pickup bolts, done.

hehe gotta240, you feel my pain too.

I took a picture of the strange bolt I didn't remove yet. I don't know what to do with them cuz I don't have that strange tool with me... I hate my car with a passion right now.

hang on. i'm going to look at mine now.

edit. Those are allignment dowels that are stuck in the block. they just hold the cover in proper position. Don't try to take them out.

Just remove all the bolts, oil pan, oil pickup, and it will pop off.

Here's a better view of what I did today...

I don't know if I should remove the two other bolt on each side of the lower timing chain.

Spray lube on crank pulley it may be ceased to metering oil gear, and yes pics are now needed make sure you take pics of upper and lower of what u removed so far.

HEY THERE IS A BOLT BEHIND THE DISTRIBUTER (ACTUALLY TWO OF THEM) SO ONE GOES DOWN INTO BOTTOM COVER IT IS A 10MM DID YOU REMOVE THEM

oh yea almost forgot the pcv come off with the bottom cover you have to disconnect the water hoses and pcv breather hoses from the back did you do that also

I removed so far:

All the bolts attached to the lower timing chain cover, I kept the water pump and the thermostat.

I removed the alternator braket
the crank pulley has you can see.
the oil pan.
the oil pickup tube (3 bolts total)
A vaccum/tube behind the thermostat.

Some people told me it was not necessary to remove the upper timing chain cover.... that's why I'm keeping it.

Maybe I did everything...but that cover is pretty hard to remove... fuck!

I assume you also took he upper timing cover off as well? I'm pretty sure you need to take that off. Don't quote me on that though. Ive always had it off already before tackling the lower cover lol.

Thats what i said. I don't think its necessary, but it def. makes things easier and lessens the chance of missing a bolt.

If i were you, i'd remove distributor, remove upper cover, then lower cover.

Finally the job is DONE! There was no missing bolt......... I feel soooo stupid.. It was only very, very well sealed I could not believe it. I used a mastic knife and a hammer between the cover and the bloc and it moved after that! Now, the engine is ready to drop, there's no more oil on the engine so 97turbokasilvia will be happy ! lol I can lick my engine now!

There's only a bad thing I did...... I didn't want to remove the upper timing chain cover... I just hope it'll not leak from the top... I'll be able to tell you if the job is perfect this week.

I hope you:

1) replaced the hat seal
2) didn't go as crazy on the timing cover as you did up top on the head gasket with RTV

I've seen three engines fail due to low oil pressure from people gooping so much RTV that they block the oil passage into the block from the oil pump. First startup, brand new parts or timing kit, 10 minutes later they've got shredded bearings.

Thank you project RDM for the neg. I didn't go crazy on my silicone except on the top. I respected the 3mm to 5mm passage on the rest of the cover. I'm not as bad as you think. I'll clean that thing off.

On the rest of the cover, it's very clean, even the oil pan is looking perfect.

Don't get butthurt over neg reps. They happen, trust me. Oh and unless he actually put his SN in the neg rep (which I do for non-premies, neg or pos.)... then yeah.

But yeah, RDM the same thing happened to my friend's s13 motor. Old man who owned the car last went muy loco with the RTV... Spun two bearings. Sucks.
