Pistons break from detonation, heat, or foreign object damage like hitting valves or something. Rods break from running on an oil starved bearing and warping from frictional heat.

Really, there are TONS of reasons for engine failure. Most common I've seen on SR's: over-revving.

they break from:

1) me using a drillpress to make a hole in the piston
2) using the rod as a device to hammer out steering knuckle bolts
3) jamming the gearbox into 1st at 100mph will likely result in something blowing up

That really doesn't help too much either due to the whole thing with different psi on different turbos making different CFM's. And he didn't even mention turbos so that's another thing that he could fix about his question. But Ace pretty much has this one answered. But, now I'm wondering how high people were revving in their SR's and to be more exact was it all up in the redline? (Need knowledge on SR revving capabilities)

The max anyone has revved an SR, i'm told, is 11k without breaking something. This supposedly includes the big name companies. Stock SR's start to fall apart above 8000RPM I think, when the rocker arms snap, hopefully shutting the valves preventing damage to the valve or piston. One person said that it was a built in "safety feature" on SR's, although I do know one person that over-revved his SR with a bad downshift and damaged his valves/ pistons before half the rocker arms broke (possibly from the valve piston contact).

seems alot of people lose the engines from oil problems, driver error, and over boosting with crap equpiment/setup
