Zuh, i dont think its a chop, I know there is a BMW that does look like that though. I used to see it all the time, looks kinda odd at first but this is a unique BMW, no angel eyes.

Yet again retractable headlights rule

They're pretty uncommon, but it's no photochop.
It's a nice car. I rode in one some time ago and it was quite nice, can't say I've ever driven one though. It had all sorts of high tech amenities for its time (I think they were made from 91 to 96 or so). If I remember correctly, the entire side window, b pillar and all, can be lowered. They were pretty heavy, but then again they weren't exactly built to be the sportiest of the bmw line.

The BMW 8 series! Both my wife and myself have a thing for this model. They have both 840 and 850 in different trim levels (i, ci, etc) and some even came with a 6 speed. The 840 was a V8, the 850 was a V10. Very nice cars, with an original sticker of over $120k, you can pick up a VERY nice example for ~$25k. Production years were as Cthulu said, somewhere around '91-96.
These are AWESOME cars.

I think the next car my wife & I buy will be a BMW 540i.. '99-01 or thereabouts.. I love the styling & they're just such an awesome car. We'd love to get an 8 series, but we're forced to be realistic.

Just to clarify, the 850 was a V12, around 5.5L. It had 322hp, but the ultra rare 850csi had more, around 380.

I think the s/sl 500's have v8's, and the 600 models have v12's (with a "v12" badge). Whatever, sorry to nitpick over little facts.

Back when I was a punk college kid, I came up to a stoplight heel-toe-ing into second then first behind an 850csi. I guess I spooked him because he took off like a bat out of hell. No tire squeal, no exhaust note, just ridiculous acceleration. Looked like it was being towed on a rubber band. Most reviews describe the engine as locomotive-like, it just keeps on pulling. The 850 engine is the basis of the engine in the McLaren F1 supercar.

It wasn't the first:

The front end styling was taken from the BMW M1 from the late '70s.

The 8-series oozes class, it was built to complete with the Benz SL. They're very big, very heavy, and the V12 versions are very fast.

An 840i or 850i can be had for not much money today, considering what they cost new, but they're very expensive to maintain, like the similar vintage 7-series but even more complicated.

I think they are nice looking cars. I always mistake them for the older Toyota Supras for a second, if one is coming toward me, or I only see the front of one in a parking lot.
