the differential was invented so the inside and outside wheels could turn at different speeds, because the inside wheel has less distance to travel than the outside wheel for any given turn.
what most people fail to understand is that, as the radius of the turn increases, the difference in distances that the two wheels must travel decreases. that's why you only hear the tire chirp or skip on tight turns in parking lots, etc. any turn that you'll take at 100mph is so wide that it really doesn't make a difference |

The difference between the radii of each wheel is FIXED! The rear track is constant unless you have some strange setup that can vary the width of your track. What's difference is the wheel speed. The inner wheel travels on a smaller circle, while the outer wheel travels on a larger circle. The distance between the radius of the inside wheel and the outside wheel is constant. It is the wheel speed between the two wheels that varies based on the radius of the turn. The larger the turn, the less difference in wheel speed. The tighter the turn, the more difference in wheel speed. As a sidenote, using corner speed to judge corner radius is not the correct way. It's the other way around. You use the effective radius to judge corner speed. Carry on ![]() |
