what Thermostat do u use

my thermostat went out and i was looking in to upgrade my cooling and some said that i get better cooling without a thermostat has anyone run with no thermostat

Nismo thermostat or OEM does just fine.

Where are you driving your car? Track or just street?

Z32 thermostat

You can run with no thermostat, if you have to. Winter start-ups will be a problem as the engine needs the T-stat closed so it can get up to operating temperature. Just run a Thermostat, you're not gonna gain 30whp or have a super efficient cooling system just by removing the thermostat.

If you don't beat the ever-living-shit out of your car every time you drive it, I don't recommend using the Nismo thermostat. Running an SR below specified operating temperature will result in a few problems. If you have to ask this question, STAY OEM.

Let's think about it. The thermostat regulates engine temperature by opening and closing coolant passages. If the engine temp is below the trigger temp, the thermostat closes and lets the engine heat up.

If the engine temp is above the trigger temp, the thermostat opens and lets coolant extract heat from the engine.


If your coolant temp stabilises above the thermostat's trigger temp, changing the thermostat does not do a damn thing other than making the engine harder to get to operating temp.


If your engine temp fluctuates around the trigger temp, then the thermostat will fluctuate between opening and closing. For this case, then going to a thermostat with a lower trigger temp will help stabilise engine temp.


Also, if your engine heats up so quickly that a lower trigger temp will prevent the engine from overheating, you need a better cooling system.



On mine the stock thermo is 195. My coolant temp fluctuates between 190 and 200. The thermostat keeps opening and closing. Then I changed my thermo to a 185 unit and engine temp holds 195 steadily.

If my engine was steady at something like 205+, then using a 185 thermo won't help anything because at 205 both the 195 and 185 thermo would be open.

Selecting a thermostat has nothing to do with how modded your engine is. It has to do with your engine's operating temperature.

You use the thermostat to shut off coolant flow, then when you're up to temp, you open the coolant passages and let the car cool itself.


You have to figure out your engine's ideal operating temperature. You can find this out by speaking to your engine builder, or run without a thermostat temporarily to see what temp your coolant stabilises at.

Then select a thermostat that opens slightly below that temp.

No, chevy small block.

But technically if it fits in the thermostat housing then it could be used in a Z32. I don't know if mine does. I'm using a Gates replacement part that lists a few hundred applications for the same part.

I'll be running a nismo thermostat, because i'm in california... it's never too cold to warm a car up and due to the non overuse of my car anyway it's not a big deal, wont be seeing much street duty.
