![]() I need to register a 240 in California from Arizona but step 6 of registering a nonresident vehicle in California says "The vehicle must be inspected by an authorized DMV employee, law enforcement officer, or a licensed vehicle verifier." The car's got an RB in it. What exactly is the DMV going to inspect? Is this inspection something I need to worry about or is this more of a VIN verification process? Please don't say anything along the lines of "keep it registered in Arizona." Thanks in advance.

as brndck said, all you need to know is that you're screwed for registering legally unless you swap back to stock.

Well...I had to get my 240sx re-registered and they didnt ask me to pop my hood...they just verified the VIN on my dash and door but since youre out of state...I'm not sure. Could be 50/50 really but thats what I expereinced but I'm running a stock KA so I didnt really have anything to worry about but they didnt ask me to pop my hiid either. Good luck.

when you register an out of state car they will inspect all vins (dash, door jam and firewall/engine bay tag). if anything appears to be non-stock/modified they are supposed to refer you to an inspection station/state ref for further inspection to verify that you are in compliance with california vehicle code. you WILL be required to pass a cali smog in order to register your car here.

They will inspect the motor to verify the presence of DOT and EPA certification stickers. An RB has neither.
I was going to bring an SR'ed S14 down from Washington but I did my homework first and found out I couldn't. I now have my RB25-powered S14 registered in Montana (no smog or inspection), but that's another story how I pulled that off. In short, you can't register that car in California unless you stick a KA24 in it temporarily (for the inspection). Then you're still subject to the ref if you get popped later on with the RB back in it. And when you have to smog again you have to have a hookup for that as well.
