Anyone know anything about V8s?

Hello again, I have a 98 Grand Cherokee with the 5.9 (360ci) engine and my head gasket is gone. So I thought about doing something to the heads since I need to pull them.

So does anyone know anything about these engines or does anyone know anywhere to learn about these engines?

And also, I thought about changing the cam also, is it a long job to pull it out of the block? And anyone know of replacements?

I really don't know shit about american cars, I just know imports and Nissans. lol

Thanks!!!

Most of the stuff on that forum is about the Jeeps in general, the info is great, but not really what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a 5.9 Magnum specific forum, but thanks guys!

This engine only came in the 1998 5.9 model, no other Jeep had this engine. I'm pretty sure a Jeep website isn't going to feature much info on it.

If it's anything like any other V8 the cam is usually pretty simple to yank out. The 360 has been around forever. Only problem I see is it being a 98, prepare for vacuum line hell. I guess the good news is with the heads off how hard could it be?

As far as fucking with the heads, call a couple rod shops see what they say - or any hardcore offroad shop near you.

After some reading, I found a few things out.

The 360 LA has been around since like the 60s or something, but the 360 Magnum which I have has been around since the early 90s. It's mostly the same engine, but updated and whatnot.

I saw a crate 360 Magnum that had 300hp and after some headwork and cam went up to over 400.....I'm getting excited....lol

Thanks for the links, I'm ganna look at that!!

I was about to pour money into my Jeep this winter. Then I got ahold of myself and realized modifying a daily driver Jeep really isn't worth it. Do you have a lift or anything? I would take care of that before adding power.

With a lift, it wouldn't fit into the garage and I don't have a driveway. Besides, I don't go off-roading, I just like the Jeep for the winter and because it's comfy as hell.

Not that hard to learn stuff on push rod motors, thats where i started growing my knowledge of how engines work from.

Kind of a rant but, i fucking hate when people claim all they know is imports or domestics. An engine is an engine regardless of what country its from. Makes me doubt how much someone really knows about "imports".

I know how engines work and I know about the engine and whatnot, but I don't know anything about the aftermarket for this engine.

I would just do a quick port job and throw in a new cam(plus what ever is needed to run the cam). Maybe a new intake as well.

^ what he said. You will get a nice bump in power but not lose the driveability / utility that makes you like that car in the first place.

maybe you can search for dodge ram upgrades too for that motor. the 5.9 was in the 90's dodges for a number of years. might come up with more answers rathen than just looking for one year in a jeep.

The dodge 360 has been around for decades with little changing from one generation to the next. There are TONS of parts out there. You just need to find what suits your budget and desire.
