pillowball mounts help tremendously under extreme driving conditions (as you already know), the OE mounts can flex, twist, even bend, hindering the performance of the shock absorber or strut which in turn may cause the vehicle to lose traction and steering response.
as knightrider stated some applications have adjustable camber plates built into the pillowball mounts to assist with fine-tuning of the suspension which answers you question for on/off road driving. if you are still interested in the replacement for the rubber mount go to autozone or pepboyz, they have a cheap insert for what you are asking however, it will not necessarily offer the same features (obviously) but will certainly be cheaper.
